we study the actual place where media production takes place [rather than the individual]. For instance we would study the New York Times, the News Gazette, or the Daily Illini if we wanted to study newspapers
refer to the invisible set of rules and barriers that prevents particular individuals, as members of a certain group based on gender, ethnic, national, and/or sexual orientation, from being promoted in any workplace, including media industries. These barriers are not written or even legal, yet have a great impact in terms of who moves up to the top executive positions in any given organization. While there are certainly examples of people who break through the glass ceiling , there are many more still bound by its limitations.
institutional level of analysis
the institutional level is a set of values and norms that cannot be found in a location, but rather exists normatively, philosophically, legally, and ethically. For example, in the United States there is such a great value placed on freedom of the press that it is institutionally enshrined as the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.
the rationalized production of media content using new forms of mass communication, such as radio and television, and the ever-expanding field of popular culture. [EX-Oprah have a multitude of new forms of communication in the culture industry.]

the companies are merging across (or within) a single stage (or level) of the production process.et's say that one studio decided to purchase another movie studio so that it could produce twice as many films each year. [EX-Pixar and Disney horizontally intergrated in a year-long trial movie to see how they would work together to create more movies.]
occurs when two companies from two different stages (or levels) of the process merge together. So examples of vertical integration would include a movie studio purchasing a distribution company or a distribution company purchasing a theater chain. [EX- Petsmart recently vertically integrated with the distribution company that delivers all of its pet supplies.]
refers to the combination of capitalism as an economic approach with political philosophy of liberalism. the government would play a smaller role and individuals would purchase previously government supported services in the marketplace. [EX- Hemp is now available in California which is a neoliberal state because of this legalization.]
Under the combined influence of neoliberal policy and the introduction of new technologies Politicians slowly instituted a whole new legal framework that was meant to open up more space for competition and thus remove the need for government regulation of oligopolies or monopolies [EX- Shell and BP gasoline are not being watched over by the government for their respective monopolies.]
Women and minorities may be represented in the media, but they may be underrepresented,they tended to be trivialized, victimized, or sensationalized,
refer to the qualitative approach to analyzing media messages. Representation contains the notion of mediation within the term as re-presentation - the message you receive through media-- is not unfiltered or unaltered, but rather it is re-presented to you through a given medium.
