The social gradient:
Life expectancy is shorter and most diseases are more common as you move down the social class ladder, almost twice the risk of death and illness

Anxiety, insecurity, low self-esteem, social isolation, etc. effect health
Long period of stress are more common in lower classes of industrialized nations.
Biological plausibility: increased heart rate, mobilizing stored energy, diverting blood to muscles take away from physiologic processes important to long-term survival. Over time cardiovascular and immune systems are compromised.
Good start in life means supporting mothers and young children
Stunted development > decreased cognitive functioning > decreased social mobility > decreased long term health
The lower you are on the social gradient the more likely you are to be excluded.
Can include housing (8th south and sunset drive division)
Can deny people access to decent housing, education, and transportation. Increases risk of divorce, liability, illness and social isolation.
Ex: voting disparities, people who don't vote because they don't feel like they are part of the community
People lower int he social gradient are exposed to more dangerous things at work.
People lower in the social gradient have less control at work because they usually aren't the boss. This causes stress and can lead to higher rates of coronary heart diseases.
Job security increases health, well-being, and job satisfaction
Higher rates of unemployment cause more illness and premature death
Unemploymmets is linked with psychological and financial problems.
Most people turn to family in times of need, then friends and then community resources
Kids at risk are likely to succeed if they have social support
Quality of community is related to increased presence of drug, alcohol, and tobacco sources/stores
Marketing practices are targeted on lower income communities.
Good diet and adequate food supply are central to health promotion and well-being
Poorer communities have more dollar stores and fast food options and less high quality food options
Directly related to social gradient
Important because we need to be mobile for job opportunities and because individuals who drive more walk less. Having public transportation increases walking.
