Gravity
Parts of a 4-stroke Briggs and Stratton Engine
Terms in this set (49)
engine shroud
Protects cylinder head fins from clogging with debris. Directs airflow over cylinder head to assist with cooling
breaker point cover
protects points and condenser from moisture, dirt and debris.
camshaft
The "lobes" on the cam affect the port timings of the motor.
crankshaft
The output side of the crankshaft will vary in size. This is the PTO side. The lobes of the crankshaft affect the port timing durations.
cylinder head
Most often made from aluminium to disperse heat. Multi point fastening to reduce warpage. ALWAYS tighten and loosen in a sequential starlike pattern to SLOWLY bring up to , and to remove torque settings.
oil slinger
slings that wonderful lubricating oil all over the inside of the motor.
piston and connecting rod
This is an item that goes only in one way. Hmm, how do we tell that? There is often an arrow that points towards the exhaust port.
valve
intake and exhaust valves look the same, but the exhaust valve is often more dirty due to carbon deposits created during the burning of the fuel and is often smaller.
connecting rod cap
This is offset so that it will only attach to the con-rod in one way.
electronic magneto coil
One end of the high tension wire goes to the spark plug.
starter clutch
This allows us to start the engine (usually with a hand pull or kick start).
perforated plate intake screen
protects your hands and small animals from the danger of the flywheel blades.
flywheel
This can often be a flywheel & fan combination or as separate items.
spark plug
Available in several different "heat ranges" and different "depths". This is the MOST COMMON reason why engines do not run!
muffler
"muffles" the sound of the engine.
This is NOT the exhaust.
piston
Different pistons allow for different numbers of rings. Some have one ring; some have four rings.
connecting rod
connects the piston to the crankshaft.
oil dipper
collects oil to be thrown around the engine for lubrication purposes.
electronic magneto coil
One end of the high tension wire goes to the spark plug and the other thin wire does to the condenser.
carburetor
A poorly set carb is the 4th MOST COMMON reason why engines don't run
piston pin / wrist pin
This pin connects the crankshaft to the piston.
air cleaner (foam)
A clogged air cleaner (foam, mesh, paper, stainless) is the 2nd MOST COMMON reason why engines do not run.
tappet
allows the valves to open and close. These are "pushed" open with either the camshaft (cam), or pushrods riding on the cam.
oil ring
What piston ring has oil slots in it?
oil ring
Has slots in the ring to hold the oil, and lubricate the cylinder bore. Usually the lowest of the piston rings.
compression ring
This ring holds the compression of the engine in the cylinder. Usually there are more than one.
crankcase breather
This breather helps remove excess pressure from the inside of the engine cases.
barrel and plunger oil pump
This helps pump the oil around the inside of the engine.
oil drain plug
This drain plug is for removing the ______.
starter pulley
This pulley connects to the starter. It is called the:__
valve spring
This goes around the valve to help keep it closed.
crankcase (sump) cover
This is the cover that attaches to the crankcase.
crankcase (sump) cover
What is the name of this cover that attaches to the crankcase?
baffle. This directs the air flow from the flywheel to go over the cylinder head and cool it down.
Hmmm, I'm "baffled" by the function of this sheetmetal, but it looks like it directs air flow over the cylinder to help cool down the cylinder head.
starter pulley spring
This piece of spring steel connects to the starter pulley
emergency flywheel brake stop
In an emergency, this brakes the flywheel
cylinder head gasket
a gasket for the cylinder head.
crankcase oil seal
a seal to keep liquids out... or in....
oil fill plug cap
plastic cap for the oil fill
condensor clamp
this clamps the condenser to the engine case.
valve spring retainer clip / valve spring keeper
this "keeps" the valve spring in place.
breaker point
these are the parts of the ignition that open and close to provide the spark for the ignition system.
camshaft & timing gear
Allows us to properly time the engine and operate the valves.
cylinder head bolt
Bolts that hold the thing to the thing.
air cleaner (paper filter)
This removes particles and impurities from the air
air vane governor
Limits engine speed according to airflow.
condensor
Difficult to determine if this is working. Requires specialized equipment to assess.
fuel tank
Bad gas / old gas is the 3rd MOST COMMON reason why engines do not run. Lets discuss this.
fuel filter
If the filter is clogged, fuel will not enter the carb. This is a directional item. Ensure it goes the correct way.
