digits
The symbols used to show numbers. ex. 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9
value
The number a digit represents is determined by the position of the digit.
standard form
A common way of writing a number with commas separating groups of 3, starting from the right. ex. 123,673
expanded form
A way to write a number that shows the place value of each digit. ex. 123= 100 + 20+ 3
word form
A way of expressing numbers using words. ex. 123 = One hundred twenty-three
equivalent decimals
Decimals which name the same amount. ex. .7=.70
Commutative Property
The order of the addends in addition can be changed, and the order of the factors can be changed in multiplication, but the sum and product still remain the same.
Associative Property
In addition, addends can be regrouped and the sum remains the same. In multiplication, the factors can be regrouped and the product remains the same.
Compensation
Adjusting one number of an operation to make computations easier and balancing the adjustment by changing the other number.
Compatible Numbers
Numbers that are easy to compute with mentally.
rounding
A process that determine which multiple of 10,100,1,000, etc., a number is closest to.
Identity Property of Multiplication
The property that states that the product of any number and 1 is that number.
Zero Property of Multiplication
The product of any number and 0 is 0.
Distributive Property
Multiplying a sum (or difference) by a number is the same as multiplying each number in the sum (or difference) by the number and adding (or subtracting) the products. ex. 3 X (10 + 4) = (3 X 10) + (3 X 4)
factors
Numbers that are multiplied to get a product.
product
The number that is the result of multiplying two or more factors.
multiple
The product of a given whole number and any other whole number.
overestimate
The result of using larger numbers to estimate a sum or product. The estimate is larger than the actual answer.
underestimate
The result of using lesser numbers to estimate a sum or product. The estimate is smaller than the actual answer.
partial product
Products found by breaking one of two factors into ones, tens, hundreds, and so on, and then multiplying each of these by the other factor.
base
The number that is multiplied by itself when raised to a power.
exponent
A number that tells how many times the base is used as a factor.
power
A number that tells how many times the base is used as a factor.
exponential notation
A way to write a number using a base and an exponent.
squared
A name for a number to the second power.
cubed
A name for a number to the third power.
quotient
The answer to a division problem.
dividend
The number to be divided.
divisor
The number used to divide another number.
