Philosopher
a person who reflects (thinks) about life and questions everything.
Sophists
A group of philosophers that traveled from polis to polis. They made a living by teaching.
rhetoric
the art of public speaking and debate.
Socratic Method
A method of teaching where questions are asked and students find the answers for themselves.
Hippocratic Oath
An oath that says that doctors should do their best to help a patient and protect their privacy.
Philosophy
Greek word that means "love of wisdom." It is a body of knowledge.
Plato
A student of Socrates. Wrote the book, The Republic. In the book he divided the society into three groups: philosopher kings, warriors and citizens.
Socrates
Started as a sculptor but loved philosophy. Taught students through the Socratic method. Was charged with urging young people to rebel and was sentenced to death.
Aristotle
He studied and compared governments of different city-states to find the best system. Wrote the book, Politics, and divided governments into three types: monarchy, oligarchy and democracy.
Herodotus
Considered to be the "father of history."
Thucydides
Considered to be the greatest historian in the ancient world. He wanted to leave behind ideas so that others could learn.
Thales
Greek scientist who made discoveries and developed theories by observing and thinking.
Pythagoras
Greek Scientist. Taught his students that the universe followed the same laws that governed music and numbers.
Hippocrates
A doctor of ancient Greece. Regarded as "the father of medicine." Gave us the Hippocratic Oath.
