Electricity
The flowing motion of an electric charge
Electric current
The rate at which charges pass through a given point; measured in amperes
Electric conductor
A substance through which electrical charges can easily flow
Insulator
A substance through which electric charges cannot move
Electric circuit
A closed loop of conductors through which electrical charges can flow
Resistance
The opposition to a flow of electric charge; Expressed in ohms
Resistor
Anything that electricity can not travel through easily; Often results in a conversion to another form of energy, such as light or heat. (light bulb)
Voltage
The pressure behind the flow of electrons in a circuit (resulting from the energy released as a charge moves between 2 points in a circuit)
Series circuit
Circuit in which all parts are connected in a single loop; only allows one path for the charges to follow
Parallel circuit
Circuit in which there is more than one path ("branch") for electrons to flow
Short circuit
An electrical connection that allow current to take and unintended path; usually resulting in a flow through the area of low resistance, bypassing the rest of the circuit
Switch
A device that closes or opens a circuit, thereby allowing or preventing current flow
