Measures of Central Tendency
-Mean, median, mode
Measures of Central Tendency Tell Us About...
-The average or typical score of the distribution
-Does not allow for the complete understanding of the distribution
-We do not know how the scores in the distribution vary
Mode
The most frequently occurring score(s) in a distribution
Median
-the middle score in a distribution; half the scores are above it and half are below it
Finding the Median
1. Reorder the data in numerical order
2. Find the middle score in the distribution
2a. If the amount of scores is an even number, find the average between the two middle scores
Mean
Find the average of every score in the distribution
Measures of Variability
-Range
-Variance
-Standard Deviation
Measures of Variability are Used to...
Examine how scores are scattered around the center of a distribution
Range
The difference between the highest and lowest scores in a distribution (H-L)
Variance
-Measures dispersion in the awkward terminology of "the mean of the squared deviations from the mean of the distribution"
Finding the Variance
1. Find the mean of the distribution
2. Find the deviation by subtracting the mean from each data point (X-x̅)
3. Square each deviation (X-x̅)^2
4. Find the sum of all of the squared deviations
∑(X-x̅)^2
5. Divide the sum by the number of deviations minus one (∑(X-x̅)^2) / n-1
Standard Deviation
-Describes an average distance of every score from the mean
-Represents the typical deviation from the mean
Finding the Standard Deviation
1. Do the first five steps of variance
2. Find the square root of the variance
The Normal Curve
-The symmetrical, bell-shaped curve that describes the distribution of many physical and psychological attributes --> not necessarily gathered from actual observations
-Most scores fall near the average, and fewer and fewer scores lie near the extremes.
What is at the peak of the normal curve?
The mean
Standard Deviation on the Normal Curve
The distance from the mean to the point where the curve shifts direction
