What are some functions of political parties?
Mobilize and educate voters, create party platforms, recruit candidates, manage campaigns, implement public policy
What are some of the ways that political parties mobilize voters?
Mail, email, polls, contact in person, train volunteers to interact with elected officials.
What does the Republican Party Platform generally lobby for?
Strong national defense, reduction of wasteful government spending, limited regulations on business
What does the Democratic Party Platform generally lobby for?
Aggressive efforts for minority rights, stronger protections for the environment, more government services to solve public problems

Candidates rely on 2 forms of TV placement. List them and explain their differences.
They rely on News Story and Commercials. News is free publicity, however the candidate can't control any potential biases. Commercials are expensive, but the candidate is allowed to give exactly what they want to say to the masses.
Each party a party chair. What are their responsibilities?
Guiding the party's daily operations, building up memberships, seek funding, recruiting candidates, conveying party philosophy.
Campaigns used to be party-centered. What does that mean?
Voters voted based on party affiliation and sometimes voted for entire party tickets
Now campaigns are candidate centered. Explain what that means.
Voters vote for their candidate over the party; a split ticket.
Why did campaigns shift from party centered to candidate centered?
TV gave the people a look into the personalities of the candidates they were voting. They began to vote based on how they liked their candidate.
When citizens become independent voters due to mistrust of government and political parties, what is that called?
There are four types of third parties, what are they?
Ideological party, Splinter party, Economic protest party, Single-issue party
What are the barriers to third parties?
Lack of money and resources compared to the main parties, lack of name recognition for candidates, the winner-take-all system of voting, people not believing in them, lack of ballot and media access.
List the benefits to interest groups
Allows citizens to be heard, can pressure government to change, allows multiple viewpoints to be discussed
List the drawbacks to interest groups
Unintentionally promotes hyper pluralism. When there are too many competing groups, the ones with the most resources get the most attention.
What is the Iron Triangle?
Public policy making relationship between the public, Legislature, and bureaucracy

What are some goals of interest groups?
Connect with the executive branch, interact with bureaucratic agencies, try to meet with President.

Incentive that allows members of like minds to gather together socially
