The display of animal behavior.
Why should animal behavior be at the center of any zoo's mission?
it is the only thing that zoos can add to our culture that other places cannot.

Providing opputunities for the animals to behave how they would in the wild.

What is the difference between the behaviors described in an ethogram and those in a behavioral budget?
The behaviprs in an ethogram describe the actual behavipr itself and usually take place over a short period of time, such as fluffing feathers. A behavior budget describes behaviors that take place over a longer time period and describes the category the behavipr fits in, such as socializing.

They can use it to ensure that their animals are behaving as they normally would in the wild.
What should the keeper do if her animals' behavior differs from that reported for conspecifics in the wild?
They should adjust the animals exhibit, so it more closely mathces their wild habitat.
What things can the keeper adjust so that the ethograms and behavioral budgets of their animals come as close as possible to matching those for wild animals of the same species?
They can change the way they feed thme, change the complexity of their exhibit, etc.
What is the consequence of the fact that animals cannot use words to inform us about their health or mental state?
They cannot tell us if they are sick, so keepers have to look at their behavior for clues as to how healthy they are.
How can behavioral observations help in the captive reproduction of solitary species?
Solitary species may be aggressive when not in estrus, so they have to watch for behaviors indicating it will be safe to introduce another animal.

Giraffes rarely if ever drink for the 24 hours bfore giving birth.
