Reread the identified passage. Then, respond to the question that follow. It's when the map covers a significant portion of the earth's surface that things get tricky. That's when you face the second part of the mapmaker's problem: the earth's curvature. How do you represent features of a curved surface on the flat surface of a map? Holmes likes to explain the problem by using an orange to represent the earth. To obtain a map of the earth's surface, the most obvious approach is to remove the peel and lay it flat. But no matter how hard you try, the orange peel stays curved. It is in order to overcome the orange-peel problem that mapmakers turn to mathematics. The challenge facing the cartographer, then, is to represent the curved surface of the earth, or a portion of it, on a flat sheet of paper. Mathematicians call such a representation a "projection" they say the earth's surface is projected onto a flat plane. Ideally, a cartographer wants to represent accurately those geographic features that are important in a map-direction, shape, scaled distance, and scaled surface area. In other words, to be really useful, a map should tell you which direction to go to get from A to B, what is the shape of a particular region C (state, country, topographic region, etc.), how far it is from A to B, and how big is region C. However, because of the orange peel problem, it is not possible to find a projection that preserves all four of these features at once. The cartographer has to make a choice, depending on the purpose the map is intended to serve. Once that choice has been made, the mapmaker then turns to geometry to find the appropriate projection-a formula that translates points from one geometric shape to another, from a sphere _ to a flat plane. How does the second paragraph relate to the first? Explain.
