What factors led to the start of feudalism?
Invasions by Vikings, Muslims, Magyars, Kings & emperors were too weak to maintain order and people needed protections for their homes and land.
How did a lord and vassal meet their responsibilities in feudal contract?
They established by custom and tradition and by an exchange of pledges known as the feudal contract

Inheritance was restricted, land was past to older son, women received land as part of her dowry, women regained rights of land after death of husband.

protection, farm land, could not be forced off land, food, housing and land
How was the Manor self sufficient?
produced everything they needed; crops, vegetables, milk, fuel, cloth, lumber, etc.; merchants visited manors and brought news from the outside world
Why was peasant life harsh?
Men, women & children worked long hours, from sunup to sundown - during planting seasons men guided ox through the fields with his wife guiding the ox, kids pulled weeds, took care of pigs and sheep
