Attachment 1 - N-95 High Filtration Masks
Terms in this set (10)
What will PF&R provide all employees at risk of respiratory exposure with?
NIOSH approved High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter mask approved by Occupational Safety and Health Administration OSHA for protection against TB and other respiratory diseases.
-Field personnel who are exposed to patients with active tuberculosis, bacterial meningitis or other airborne diseases are at risk of becoming infected with these diseases.
PF&R will provide all employees at risk of respiratory exposure with High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter mask for protection against TB and other respiratory diseases. These masks are approved by what two agencies?
NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health)
OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration)
When will a NIOSH approved High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter mask be worn?
The mask shall be worn any time there is a risk of respiratory exposure to tuberculosis, meningitis, or other infectious diseases.
How should a 3M- N-95 mask fit
The regular sized 3M N-95 mask fits most people, and a small one is available for people with a small or thin face. The mask should fit snugly without air leakage.
In compliance with Federal OSHA regulations and Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention recommendations, a NIOSH approved high filtration mask shall be used when the patient has suspected or confirmed tuberculosis, including:
1) While in the same room with a suspected or confirmed TB patient.
2) When intubating, ventilating, suctioning, or administering aerosolized
medications to patients with suspected or confirmed TB.
3) When transporting patients with suspected or confirmed TB.
The following groups have been identified as being at high risk for tuberculosis: (6)
1) Persons with HIV infection
2) Close contacts of infectious TB cases
3) Foreign-born persons from Asia, the Pacific Islands, Africa, and Latin America
4) Low-income populations, including homeless persons
5) Alcoholics and IV drug users
6) Residents of long-term care facilities such as nursing homes and/or correctional institutions
You should suspect active TB in any patient who?
1) Is in one of the high-risk groups identified above and complaining of cough of over two weeks duration.
2) Is not in a high-risk group but complaining of productive cough of over two weeks' duration accompanied by any of the following secondary
-Lethargy or weakness
-Loss of appetite
-Coughing up blood
When treating and transporting patients with suspected or confirmed TB, or other infectious respiratory disease?
the patient should be asked to wear a HEPA mask if tolerated. A non-rebreather mask also provides protection.
If the patient feels the need to remove the surgical mask? Or in other words, what can you do if a suspected TB patient can't tolerate wearing a mask during treatment/transport?
provide the patient with tissues and instruct the patient to cover his/her mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
-Ventilation should be increased to the greatest extent possible by opening windows and doors. During transport
-the exhaust fan in the patient compartment should be turned on in conjunction with the Heat/AC blower fan to create airflow towards the rear of the vehicle, away from the driver.
-The paramedic with the patient, should sit towards the front - away from potentially contaminated airflow.
-When the exhaust fan is on, outside air must be introduced from the vent. This method provides for dilution and removal of contaminated air and prevents the intrusion of exhaust gases.
The N-95 mask is disposable and should be disposed of at the completion of the run.
Foreign-born persons from which countries are considered high risk for TB?
Asia, the Pacific Islands, Africa, and Latin America
