Chapter 11 Vocabulary
Terms in this set (15)
Any object or particle with normal magnetic properties (i.e having two magnetic poles). All magnets are magnetic dipoles.
the influence surrounding a magnet where it exerts a magnetic forces modeled by lines of force
Law of Magnetism
Opposite magnetic poles attract and like magnetic poles repel.
The phenomenon observed in materials that are highly permeable to magnetic lines of force because their magnetic domains align with the field, reinforcing it. Aligned magnetic domains can produce permanent magnetism.
The temperature above which a permanent magnet loses its ferromagnetic properties.
The magnetic field of the earth. Several theories for the origin of the field have been suggested, including the geodynamic theory, where convection currents in the earth's liquid core create the field, and the original creation theory favored by many young-earth creationists.
right-hand rule of magnetism
A method for determining the direction of the magnetic field surrounding a current carrying conductor. It is initiated by the direction that fingers wrap around the conductor, if it is grasped with the right hand with the thumb pointing in the direction of conventional current flow.
An electrical current that periodically changes direction. In the US the frequency for a complete AC cycle is 60 Hz. Most of the countries in the world use 50 Hz AC.
Energy generated from a changing magnetic field or a magnetic field generated by an electrical current through a conductor.
A mechanical engine that converts fluid motion into rotary motion as the fluid passes through propellor type blades.
an electrical device that uses electromagnetic induction to raise or lower the available voltage to the voltage required by an AC circuit. Consists of input coil and output coil of wire.
a transformer that decreases voltage
a transformer that increases voltage
a solenoid that contains a ferromagnetic core. The core greatly increases the magnetic field strength of the solenoid.
