Historical fiction is a book genre that has a real-life event with fictional characters. In All Quiet on the Western Front the event of World War One was real while the characters are fictional. For example, Paul Baumer and his friends were made up to demonstrate the hardships of war. Paul and his friends struggled with the effects of shell shock from WW1. The things Paul went through in the book, were actual examples of the side effects and what happened during the war.
Historical fiction is a confusing genre. It is hard to make things historically accurate while still keeping an element of fiction. characters help develop and connect the event to the reader and help the reader have a better understanding of the event. Historical fiction can help teach readers about historical events in an interesting way. All Quiet on the Western Front is an example of historical fiction.
