EG 1: Spatial relations
Space isn't just where things happen, it is also why things happen where they do
EG 1: Four concepts of space
1. Location - the positioning of people and objects relative to each other
2. Territory - the carving out of defined portions of space and exercising power over them
3. Place - places are formed when space takes on certain unique characteristics that are meaningful to the people who interact with them
4. Scale - territories and places are defined areas of space, but might represent a range of different scales
EG 1: Relative space
Frequently more important in economic terms than absolute space - relative space is measured in costs/travel time/etc
EG 1: The spatial pattern of economic activity is shaped by distance and proximity to certain production requirements
Examples: Servers, textile mill placement, etc
EG 1: Territory
A bounded space under the control of a group of people, usually a state
EG 1: Places are not just the outcome of contemporary connections
They are also the result of historical place-making from different periods of time, each layered on top of the period before
EG 1: Global, marco-regional, national, regional, urban, local, workplace/home, and body scale

1. Scales are not hierarchical
2. Economic processes work at multiple scales simultaneously
3. Scales are not naturally occurring
EG 1: Scales are humanly created in two ways
1. National and urban scales refers to entities that we have collectively created
2. Each of the scales is being actively constructed and reconstructed with ongoing changes in our economies and societies - this is called the "production of scale"
