Variable:
is a symbol that represents an unknown quantity/
value such as x, y, or n, ; the value can change (expressions,
inequalities)
Expression:
a mathematical phrase (does not have an = )
Numerical Expression:
contains only numbers!
ex. 3 + 4 - 2
Algebraic Expression:
an expression that contains variables
and/or numbers (there can be more than one variable in an
expression)
Term:
when addition or subtraction separates an algebraic
expression
Like Terms:
terms that have the same variable, same power, and
or same exponent)
Coefficient:
is the number in front of the variable(s) in a term
** when you don't have a number in front of the variable, it is an
"implied 1" so the coefficient of x is 1
Constant:
a numerical value that is added/subtracted in an
expression; this value does NOT change since there is no variable
Equation:
a mathematical sentence ( = ) where two
expressions are equivalent
