Physical Science Chapter 4 Lesson 2 What Happens When Light HIts an Object?
Terms in this set (37)
allows light to pass through so that whatever is behind can be seen
allows light to pass through but scatters it so that whatever is behind it cannot be clearly seen
Clear glass, clean water, and clear plastic are all transparent
Tissue paper, wax paper, and some kinds of glass and plastic are translucent
does not allow light to pass through
Bricks, wood, books are opaque
Why do you see color
1. Because of what happens to light when it hits different material. 2. Because white light is made up of all the colors.
Seeing color of transparent and translucent objects
The blue glass looks blue because it absorbs all the colors in light except blue. Blue glass lets blue light pass through it. Therefore it looks blue.
Transparent and translucent objects
Are the color of the light they transmit or let pass through
to allow to pass through
to take in
to bounce back
When light hits the chili pepper, the pepper absorbs or takes in all the colors in the light EXCEPT red. The pepper looks red because it reflects or bounces back the red light
Why do some objects look white?
A white object reflects all the colors in white lights.
Why do some objects look black?
Black objects absorb almost all of the light that hits them. They do not reflect any colors of light
In a dark room
you cannot see anything
You see objects
because the objects reflect light to your eyes
Place an object in front of a flat mirror
you see the image of the object
has a smooth shiny surface. The light rays hit the mirror at a certain angle or direction. And the rays reflect off the mirror at the same angle or direction
Light rays that hit the rough wall reflect in many different directions. Therefore if you had toys sitting in front of the rough wall, you would not be able to see a reflection of the toys on the wall
Fun House mirror
Each light ray that hits the surface of the curved mirror is reflected back at the same angle that it hits. Because the surface is curved, the light rays that hit the mirror in different places bounce off in different directions. Therefore you do not see a good image. The image can be smaller or larger, or upside down
used in stores so that clerks can see people all over the stores, help drivers see a larger area of traffic behind them
a lens that is thicker in the middle than at the edges
a lens that is thinner in the middle than at the edges
Travels at different speeds through different materials.
Light changes speed it also changes direction. Light bends when it moves from one material to another
Flower in a vase
The light rays that reflect from the top of the flowers in the vase move through the air. These rays do not bend. The light rays that reflect from the stems in the water travel back through the water before they reach the air. Light travels faster through air than it does through water. When these rays move into the air, they change speed and bend. The stems look broken
Convex lens bends light
Your eyes have convex lens. Microscope has convex lenses (making small objects look much larger)
Concave lens spreads light rays apart. A concave lens makes object look smaller
Why do some objects look white?
A white object reflects all the colors in white light
How does a curved mirror help a car driver?
It helps a driver see a larger area of traffic behind them, making them safer drivers.
What happens to light rays when they move from water to air?
Light travels faster through air than is does through water. And light bends when it moves from one material to another.
What happens when light rays pass through a concave and a convex lens?
Concave Lens: spreads the light rays apart
Convex LEns: bends the light rays together
When light bends
it makes objects look different than they really are
Flat mirrors reflect good images while curved mirrors reflect somewhat changes images
Can be reflected, absorbed, or transmitted when it hits different materials, and the color of light that is reflected or transmitted gives objects their color
Cause light rays to bend by changing their speed and direction
