-Hemoglobin: transports oxygen in muscle
-Myoglobin: oxygen transport in blood.
-Meats and enriched foods
-Heme iron: found only in animal flesh and absorbed much better.
-Non-heme iron: found in plant products and enriched grains, not absorbed well.
-Increasing non-heme absorption: Vit. C, acidic foods, non-heme with heme, cast iron skillet.
-Microcytic anemia : decreased blood cell size/ less oxygen makes you tired.
-Weak, pale, tired, rapid heart rate, headache, decreased attention span, Pica.
-Only way to decrease is via blood loss.
-Damage to intestinal lining
-heart disease in elderly
-Hemochomatosis (body doesn't regulate absorption, only treated by giving blood.)
