Neutrophils
Most abundant white blood cell., The most abundant type of white blood cell. Phagocytic and tend to self-destruct as they destroy foreign invaders, limiting their life span to a few days. 40-60% of WBC.
Lymphocytes
A type of white blood cell that make antibodies to fight off infections. There are 3 types: T Cells, B Cells, and NK Cells.
Monocytes
*A type of white blood cell that transforms into macrophages, extends pseudopods, and engulfs huge numbers of microbes over a long period of time. Stored in Spleen and moves in blood to infected tissues. 0-7% of WBCs.
Eosonophils
Releases toxins that kill bacteria and parasites but also causes tissue damage. Circulates in blood and migrates to tissues. 0-.3% of WBCs.
Basophils
A circulating leukocyte that produces histamine. 0-1% WBCs.
Never Let Monkeys Eat Bananas
Neutrophils, Leukocytes, Monocytes, Eosinophils, and Basophils.
ADAPTIVE IMMUNE SYSTEM
the third layer of defense in the immune system that's composed of highly specialized, systemic cells and processes that eliminate or prevent pathogen growth
AGRANULOCYTES
white blood cells that contain no granules; the agranulocytes include the lymphocytes and monocytes
ANAPHYLAXIS
serious allergic reaction that's rapid in onset and can cause death, though it typically causes a number of symptoms including rash, throat swelling and low blood pressure
ANTIBODIES
Y-shaped proteins produced by B-cells that are used by the immune system to identify and neutralize foreign objects such as bacteria and viruses and other foreign matter
ANTIGEN
foreign substance that evokes the production of antibodies
ANTI-NUTRIENT
any "food" that requires more nutrients for the body to use it than the food itself
supplies
APOPTOSIS
programed cell death; cell "suicide"
AUTOIMMUNE REACTIVITY
the second stage of autoimmunity when the antibodies are elevated AND there is a loss of function, but no grave destruction of tissue yet
AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE
the third and final stage if autoimmunity when the antibodies are elevated AND there are significant symptoms AND a significant loss of function
