What are the chief functions of the blood?
To deliver oxygen to the tissues, remove waste, and maintain fluid-balance
What is Hematopoiesis? Where does it occur? (Adult & Fetus)
It is the production of RBC's and adults RBC are made in the bone marrow while a fetus is made in the spleen
Plasma; what is it's function?
It helps maintain acid-base balance and delivering nutrients/electrolytes to the tissues
Two proteins found in plsma?
Albumin/Fibrinogen
What is albumin? What does it do? Where is it made?
It is a protein found in the blood and made in the liver. (3.4-5).
What happens when Albumin is low? What causes it?
Kidney disease can cause lower levels. Low levels create issues with the fluid balance and messes with the oncotic pressure. It keeps fluid in the vasculature instead of flushing it in and out
What is Fibrinogen for?
It helps in the inflammation process with clotting. It helps prevent hemorrhaging
What is the funtion of RBC? How long do they live? Where are they made?
They deliver oxygen to the tissues and exchange O2 for CO2. They are made in the bone marrow and live for 120 days
What is Hgb? What does it do? When is it saturated?
It is a protein that carries the O2. Exchanges Oxygen in the tissues at the lungs. It is considered saturated when all 4 parts have an Oxygen
What is the relationship between CO and Hgb?
The CO competes with Hgb for binding to Iron. CO has a greater affinity for binding than Hgb.
Normal Hgb and RBC count?
Hgb: M:14-18 W:12-16
RBC: M: 4-5million W:3-5million
What is erythropoiesis?
production of red blood cells in the bone marrow
When Hypoxia occurs what does the Kidneys release?
When decreased O2 occurs the kidneys release Erythropoietin to stimulate the increase/production of RBC's (Hypoxia/Anemia)
.Function of WBC? Where are they made/Where do they acr?
WBC fight against infection. They are made in the bone marrow
What is a left shift?
When infection is significant, high levels of neutrophils are present in labs, and this is known as a "left shift".
