Which countries saw dramatic shifts in power in the early 20th century?
Revolutions destroyed the governments of Russia, China, Mexico, and the Ottoman Empire. All these governments were authoritarian.

A revolution led by Vladimir Lenin and the Bolshevik party establish the communist government.
What happened in the Revolution in China?
The Chinese Republic led by Sun Yat-sen was created in 1912 as a result of the conflict between the Manchurian Qin and Han.
What happened in the Revolution in Mexico?
Because of the wealth gap between the landless peasants and the rich elite, Madero led a successful revolt against President Porfiro Diaz. Madero was assassinated and this led to more revolts and socialist reforms.
What happened in the Revolution in the Ottoman Empire?
The empire suffered many defeats and had a poor economy. The Young Turks fought for a Constitutional Government which came to power under president Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1923 (WWI).

Serbian nationalists killed the Archduke of Austria-Hungry, which led to the allies joining the conflict
What is a total war?
all of a nation's resources go into the war effort, including civilians (non-military citizens) and manufacturing were ordered to join the effort by the government.
How did changes in technology make this war different from all that had come before?
Modern weaponry like machine guns, poison gas and methods like trench warfare created the bloodiest conflict ever known. Both sides suffered great loses and no one side could win. The Western Front ended in a stalemate.
What is propaganda and how was it used in World War I?
When a government disseminates information that is highly biased or false to provoke a strong nationalistic response. It was used in WWI to create support for a bloody and expensive war.
