What is biofeedback?
Surface EMG feedback detects the underlying electrical activity of muscle tissue and converts it to something auditory or visual to help the patient visualize it
°Measured in microvolts
°GAIN setting determines the sensitivity of the device
±Higher gain = higher sensitivity of device
What is EMG amp of ms at rest? Healthy ms contractions?
approx 2 microvolts at rest. Greater than 20-30 millivolts at healthy ms contraction
What is peak amplitude?
highest EMG activity recorded during a ms contraction
What is Contraction latency?
time it takes to reach peak ampl following a command to contract a ms (~0.5 sec)
What is return latency?
time from the command to stop a ms contraction to the pt the myoelectrical activity returns to resting or baseline (~1 sec) à longer return latency can reflect an inability for a muscle to relax (hypertonicity)
What is hold capacity?
time during which consistent EMG amp is observed and reflects the endurance of a ms or ability to sustain a ms contraction; alternatively an erratic EMG reflects poor hold capacity
What is threshold?
goal level of myoelectrical activity set by the clinician based on above described therapeutic goals and variables; goal will be to reach above threshold or below threshold
How do you capture trace muscle contraction?
Set gain higher
What are indications for biofeedback?
±Facilitate muscle activity to improve muscle performance
±Neuromuscular reeducation for coordination and function
±Post stroke or strengthening
±Reducing muscle activity
±Inhibit muscle activity
what are common muscle performance impairments post stroke?
-Foot drop: facilitate ant tib, inhibit gastroc to improve gait
-Shoulder hemiparesis: facilitate upper trap, facilitate anterior delt to reduce shoulder subluxation
-Hand hemiparesis: inhibit wrist/finger flexors, facilitate wrist/finger extensors to improve grasp
Contraindication and precautions of biofeedback
±If activation of muscle will exacerbate an acute inflammatory condition
±Use of intravaginal devices while pregnant
±First 6 weeks postpartum
±Allergic to adhesives
