Long Division

Improper Fraction
A fraction where the numerator is greater than the denominator
Product
The answer to a multiplication problem
Expanded Form
A way to write numbers that shows the value of each digit

347 = 300 + 40 + 7
Tenths
The place value that is to the right of the ones place.

Rounding
Strategy to create a simpler number by looking at the place value to the right and deciding whether a numbers stays the same or gets larger by 1.
Place Value
The value of the place of a digit in a number
Thousandths
The place value to the right of the hundredths place in a decimal number

The answer to a division problem
Whole Number
Counting numbers such as 0,1,2,3,4,5,6 etc. These numbers do not have decimal points, fractions, or negative signs.
Hundredths
In a decimal number, this place value is to the right of the tenths place.

Sum
The answer to a addition problem
Estimate
A number close to an exact amount that tells about how much
Dividend
The number that is going to be divided.

EX. in 24/3=8, 24 is going to be divided
Divisor
The number that the dividend is being divided by

Area Model of Multiplication
A model that shows each place value product by using rectangles and expanded form
Decompose
To break down a number into smaller numbers
Factor
A number that divides evenly into another number

2X6 =12
3X4=12
Parentheses
Used in the order of operations to show grouping. The operations within these are completed first:

(2+3)x4 ----> (2+3) is solved first, then multiplied by 4
Equivalent Fraction
Fractions that have the same value

1/2 = 3/6 = 4/8
Mixed Number
A number with a whole number AND fraction parts

3 and 2/7
Numerator
The top number in a fraction.

2/5 ---> 2 is the top number
Order of Operations
The order of performing mathematical operations within a problem:

1. Parenthesis
2. Exponents
3. and 4. Multiplication and Division
5. and 6. Add and Subtract
Denominator
The bottom number of a fraction that tells how many equal parts are in each whole.

3/4 ---> 4 is the bottom number
Distributive Property
6x(10+4) = (6x10) + (6x4)

When multiplying by a sum, you can just multiply each number in the parenthesis by the outside number
Exponent
The little number in the top right corner of another number that tells the number how many times to multiply by
Convert
to change from one form or unit to another (centimeters to meters, ounces to pounds)
Compare
Determine which number is larger or smaller, notice the similarities in shapes, numbers, or graphs
Contrast
Determine the differences between numbers, graphs, or shapes
Diagram
a drawing, plan, or chart that makes something clearer or easier to understand
Expression
A math sentence without an equal sign: 4 + 7
Line Plot
A graph that displays data as points above a number line using X or tally marks
Tape Diagram
Rectangle that helps model fractions and parts of a whole
Simplify
To reduce a fraction to its lowest terms by dividing by the lowest common factor for both numerator and denominator
Convert
to change the unit or form of measurement
Interpret
Give an explanation about, give meaning to
Communicate
To tell information or ideas to
