Who came up with the Continental Drift Hypothesis?
What four pieces of evidence were used to create the Continental Drift Hypothesis?
1. Fit of the Continents
2. Climate/glacial clues
3. fossil clues
4. rock clues
Fit of Continents
many of the continents fit together like a puzzle, making it seem like they where once connected making Pangea.
There where Clues and signs of glaciers in places where they could not go/be.
some of the mountains had the same origin. but the mountains where in different places.
Some of the animals of the fossils can not cross water. but they found the animal in different countries! so had to have crossed through land
1. What were some reasons why the Continental Drift Hypothesis was not widely accepted by the scientific community?
he could not prove, how the continents and how fast. also the people could not feel the continents move.
Describe the process of seafloor spreading and how it occurs at the mid-oceanic ridge system.
Ne crust ( magma) is brought to the surface and spreading ridge and then it cools to make a rocky crust.
describe how the mid-oceanic ridge system was found.
it was found using ECHO LOCATION. that bounce of the earth's surface.
What are the two major ways the mid-oceanic ridge system can form?
1. Large amount of Lava rises and builds up
2. As new lava cools it cracks. Then the rock move up and down the mountains to make jagged mountains.
What are the two major patterns of magnetic signatures on Earth
1. Normal Polarity- out of north, in to south. the needle on compass points north.
2. Opposite of Normal Polarity
What are magnetic reversals?
Where Earth's magnetic field switches.
how magnetic reversals are found on Earth's surface.
1. What can these magnetic reversals show?
It locks in the current magnetic field, when it cools. Shows spreading formed rates or rates at which new crust.
What are Plate Tectonics
Earth's surface is made of rigid slabs that move with and respect.
What two things does plate tectonics prove is why they occur?
Earth quakes and Volcanos
What are the three major layers of Earth
crust, mantle, core
What are the three major types of plate boundaries on the Earth's surface?
Divergent- move away from each other.
Convergent- Move to each other.
Transform- slide past each other.
Why do lithospheric plates move?
They move because of convection cells in the mantle.
What are the three forces that cause plate motion?
Basal drag- current drags base of the lithosphere.
Ridge Push-New crust created at spreading center and pushes plates apart.
Slap pull- Weight of Subducting plate pulls the plates.
