Terms in this set (18)
Force
A push or pull on an object
Gravity
An attractive force that exists between all objects that have mass
Mass
The amount of matter in an object
Weight
The gravitational force exerted on an object
Friction
A contact force that resists the sliding motion of two surfaces that are touching
Compare and contrast contact forces to noncontact forces
A contact force is a push or pull on one object by another that is touching it. A noncontact force is a force that one object can apply to another object without touching it. Both are forces that act on one or more objects.
Define and name the scientist who created the Law of Universal Gravitation
Sir Isaac Newton stated all object are attracted to each other by a gravitational force.
Name and define the 3 types of friction
1.) STATIC FRICTION- Friction that prevents surfaces from sliding past each other
2.) SLIDING FRICTION- Friction that occurs when static friction reaches its limit and one or both objects slides
3.) FLUID FRICTION- Friction between a surface and a fluid (water or air)
Newton's 1st Law
States that if the net force acting on an object is zero, the motion of the object does not change
Newton's 2nd Law
States that the acceleration of an object is equal to the net force exerted on the object divided by the object's mass
Newton's 3rd Law
States that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
Balanced force
forces acting on an object that combine and form a net force of zero
Centripetal Force
In circular motion, a force that acts perpendicular to the direction of motion, toward the center of the curve
Law of Conservation of Momentum
a principle stating that the total momentum of a group of objects stays the same unless outside forces act on the objects
Another name for Newton's 1st Law of Motion?
Law of Inertia
An example of a force pair?
action=reaction
Formula for Newton's Second Law
F=ma /a=F
m /m=F
a
formula for momentum
p=mv
