Test #3 Assignment Questions
Terms in this set (13)
Choose one proposed mission to the jovian planets and write about its mission, its timeline, and why it's interesting.
The Europa Clipper. Its mission is to study detailed observations of Europa (specifically the icecrust). It won't actually orbit Europa due to radiation, rather orbiting Jupiter and just getting close to Europa. Interesting because it included cubesats, which is the idea of a spececraft the size of a loaf of bread. These are cheap to build and stackable; they were looking to send 2 on this mission. This mission is over budget and behind in development, but looking to launch in 2025 and arrive in 2030
Should Pluto be described as a planet or not? Why?
no; it should be classified as a dwarf planet. this is because of it does not meet the IAU's definition of a planet in that it has not cleared the neighboring region of other objects (and its size). it orbits the sun and is of spherical shape, but it has not cleared this region
What are the differences in asteroids and Kuiper belt objects?
Kuiper Belt objects orbit beyond the orbit of Neptune while main belt asteroids orbit closer to the Sun than Jupiter. Kuiper Belt objects are composed mostly of ices while main belt asteroids are composed mostly of rock.
What are centaur objects and where do they come from?
Centaur objects are small icy bodies that orbit between Saturn and Neptune. They are believed to come from the Kuiper Belt.
What are two differences between comets and asteroids? (distance from the sun does not count)
Features: Comets have a coma and tail, asteroids do not. Density: Comets have a much lower density than asteroids.
Draw a diagram of a typical comet when it is close to the sun. Label each component and include the typical approximate size of each component.
Which are thought to have formed the farthest from the sun: asteroids, kuiper belt objects, or oort cloud objects?
oort cloud objects
How are meteor showers linked to comets and why do they recur at about the same time every year?
Meteor showers are produced when the Earth passes through debris released from a comet as it passes close to the Sun during its orbit. This debris gradually spreads all around the comet's orbit. They occur at the same time each year because the Earth will pass close to the comet's orbit at the same time each year.
Choose one of the following missions. Write a 1-page essay describing the mission, the aims of the mission, and the object(s) it visited/will visit. (Hyabusa-2, Psyche, Lucy, DART, Deep Impact, Rosetta)
How are comets related to meteors?
Most meteors are debris shed by comets as the orbit the Sun.
What are the three different classes of meteorites?
Irons, Stony-irons, Stones
Choose one of the 3 methods of detecting extra-solar planets that we discussed in class. Describe in detail how this method works and what we can learn about any planet discovered by this method.
doppler shift. Doppler shift by detecting the motion of a star caused by the gravity of a planet pulling on it. From this we can learn the minimum mass of the planet and its orbital period
Choose one of the missions to study extra-solar planets that we discussed in class. Discuss the aims of the mission, the method it uses to study/discover extra-solar planets and any results from the mission so far.
