Terms in this set (20)
Basic unit of structure and function in living things.
A group of similar cells that perform the same function.
A group of tissues that work together to perform a function.
Group of organs that work together to perform a specific function.
Any living thing.
Organ system responsible for taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide using the lungs. Major organs include the lungs, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and bronchi.
Circulatory System/Cardiovascular System
Organ system responsible for delivering oxygen and nutrients to body cells through the blood. Major organs are the heart, arteries, and veins.
Organ system that breaks down food and absorbs nutrients. Major organs include the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, and intestines.
Organ system that controls all body functions and recognizes and responds to all internal and external stimuli. Major organs include the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
Organ system that is the structural framework that supports all body systems and provides protection to vital organs; also is responsible for making blood cells. Includes bones, cartilage, and ligaments.
Organ system responsible for moving the body, maintaining posture, and transporting things internally. Major types include smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and skeletal muscle.
Excretory System/Urinary System
Organ system that removes wastes from the body and maintains water balance. Major organs include the kidneys, bladder, and urethra.
Immune System/Lymphatic System
Organ system responsible for fighting off diseases, infections, and other harmful substances. Major components include white blood cells, lymph nodes, thymus, and spleen.
Integumentary System/Skin System
Organ system that provides protection for the body, regulates body temperature, and helps to prevent water loss. Major organ is the skin.
Organ system responsible for secreting hormones into the body to control bodily functions and maintain homeostasis. Major components include the thyroid, adrenal gland, ovaries, testes, and the hypothalamus.
Organ system responsible for helping an organism reproduce and have offspring. Major organs include ovaries, testes, uterus, male and female genitals.
Organ system in plants which consists of parts that help with reproduction and photosynthesis. Major parts are stems, leaves, flowers, and aboveground structures.
Organ system in plants which consists of roots that anchor it in the soil, absorb and transport minerals and water, and store food. Major parts are Tap Roots (Primary Roots), Lateral Roots, Root Hairs, Root Tip, Root Cap.
