Describe the setting of the story (time and place).
The setting of the story took place in San Francisco, California, in the year of 1925. Where Ailin's husband has a restaurant. The flashback of 15 years ago, took place in beijing,China where she originally is from, in the year 1911.
Ailin is different. I think Ailin is different because she didn't want to get her feet bound. Her wedding with Liu Hanwei got cancelled because she didn't have bound feet. What is extremely different about Ailin that many girls did not want, was that she wanted to learn about other places, cities, and countries, around the globe. Her father let her go to a Public school since they thought she could work for herself. Ailin was wearing high heeled shoes, she was wearing a narrow slinky dress, that is a traditional Chinese dress that had a high stiff collar and side buttons.
Who is Liu Hanwei?
Liu Hanwei is Ailins EX- Fiancé. He is a Chinese man who is part of the Liu family. He was supposed to marry Ailin but his mother called off the wedding because Ailin had unbound feet. He was chubby and a little taller than Ailin. His eyebrows were a little higher up on his forehead than they are for most people. He would usually look surprised. He wasn't afraid of choking, and would eat really fast. When Ailin met Liu Hanwei, she was 5 years old. Liu Handwei was 7 years old.
Why does Ailin feel bitterness towards Mrs. Liu?
Ailin felt bitterness towards Mrs. Liu because she was the one who decided to break off the engagement towards Liu Hanwei. She broke off the engagement because Ailin still didn't have her feet bound at the age of 5. This all happened when Liu Hanwei was 7. After, when Mrs. Liu broke of the engagement, Ailin still could feel that Liu Hanwei still liked Ailin.
How old were Ailin and Liu Hanwei when they first met?
Ailin was only 5 years old, and Liu Hanwei was only 7. They met each other when grandmother and mother where talking to Mrs. Liu. Ailin didn't know what was going on, but Liu Hanwei knew that he was already going to get married with Ailin.

The Compound has more than 50 rooms, all surrounded by wall, Ailin's family lives there. Grandmother used to live there but she passed away. Grandfather, the head of the family, lives there with his wives. Ailin's big sister's, Big uncle, and father.
How does Ailin feel about her Grandmother and Big Uncle?
What Ailin feels about her grandmother, is that Ailin thinks that she would let her get away with anything, and that she loves her grandmother very much. Grandmother is the head of the family, and without her, Ailin thinks her family would not keep up. What she thinks about Big Uncle is that he is the one that scares her the most. Ailin thinks that Big Uncle scares her the most, because he always criticizes girls, and doesn't treat children correctly. Also, because Big Uncle also always fights with Ailin's father.
What is the difference between homeschooling and public school at this time in China?
The difference between homeschooling and Public Schooling is that, in Public schools in China, only boys where allowed, and they would learn Science, English, and Astronomy. In Public schools you could make friends and you could sit with them during lunch time. Homeschooling was when girls had to hire a teacher to teach them, and you would learn myths at home.
How do Ailin's parents' views differ?
Ailin's father thinks she is way too young to get her feet bound, and that she didn't even have to do it if she didn't want to. Her mother thinks that she should get her feet bound right away since she doesn't have them, and she also thinks that she should have done that a long time ago. Ailin's mother thinks that she should also get married to Liu Hanwei straight away.
Who is Ailin closest to in her family and why?
I think who Ailin's closest in her family is her second sister because she is trustworthy, and honest to Ailin by showing Ailin the process of binding feet. The second reason why I think second sister is in the closet, is because she told Ailin the truth, and that the process of binding feet hurt, and that she would get a monthly bleeding.
What was Ailin's reaction to seeing second sisters feet
By the reaction that Ailin gave to her second sisters feet was disgusted. Second sister showed Ailin the process and Ailin thought it looked painful. Ailin found second sisters feet disgusting because it was smelly and sweaty. Ailin was also curious how her feet would fit in second sisters tiny feet.

The vow that Ailin makes at the end of Chapter 2, is that she promised to never in her life, bind her feet again. Mother and her Amah tried to bind her feet, but Ailin didn't like it, so she vowed to never bind her feet.

Mother and second sister have a conflict because Second sister showed Ailin her bound feet, how it all worked, and second sister told Ailin that it also hurt. Mother got mad at Second Sister because she showed Ailin, that made her refuse to bind her feet, run away and hide from getting her feet bound.

Father shows that he supports Ailin because he defends her. Ailin's father showed that he defended her because he told Ailin that she didn't have to her feet bound if she didn't have to. He also let her go to Public school and learn different things around the globe Because she wanted to.

I think second sister said this to Ailin because second sister's warning Ailin that she might not be accepted to society because she is different. She is different because she doesn't have bound feet.
How did things change in the family right after grandmother's death?
Things changed in the family right after grandmothers death because Big Uncle became head of the family. His wives were confused and lost since they were so used to following Grandmother's instructions.
