What are the three soil horizons and what are their characteristics?
A Horizon- It is made up of topsoil, a crumbly dark brown soil that is a mixture of humus, clay, and other minerals
B Horizon- It's often called subsoil and usually consists of clay and other particles of rock, but little humus.
C Horizon- The C horison forms when bedrock begins to weather.
What is subsoil?
The layer of soil below topsoil that has less plant and animal matter than topsoil and contains mostly clay and other minerals.
What does soil texture depend upon?
The texture of the soil depends on the size of the soil particles.
What is bedrock?
The solid layer of rock beneath the soil
What do we use to determine the acidity of soil?
How does humus form?
Humus forms from dead leaves, roots, and other plant materials are most of the organic remains that form humus.
What are the components of soil?
rock particles, minerals, decayed organic material, air, and water
What characteristics are used to describe soil?
fertility, texture, and pH
How do you tell the difference between soil horizons?
You can tell the difference between soil horizons by the color, texture, and composition form the layers above or below it.
