Frustration Level
A running record demonstrates a student read with less than 90% accuracy and responded to less than 70% of comprehension questions correctly. That level is too difficult for a student to read. Students may become frustrated with the text and struggle with gaining meaning
Instructional Level
A running record demonstrates that a student reads with 90-94% accuracy and responds to comprehension questions with 70-89% accuracy
This passage is in a student's zone of proximal development. They need support to understand everything, but they can read it without frustration
Independent Level
A running record demonstrates that a student read with at least 95% accuracy and responded to at least 90% of comprehension questions correctly. Texts at this level can be read by the student with no assistance. Students have the mental energy for practicing challenging skills because their energy is not spent decoding and comprehending.
Miscue Analysis
A procedure for analyzing the pattern in the errors students make when reading orally
Insertion
a word is added by the child that is not in the text
Omission
The student omits a word that changes the meaning of the sentence
Repetition
The student repeats a word or portion of the text
Reversal
The child reverses the order of print or words
Substitution
The child substitutes a word in the text that may or may not make sense in the passage
Differentiating Instruction
Tailoring instruction to meet individual needs.
Whether teachers differentiate content (resources), process (strategies), products (learning activities), or the learning environment (classroom, technology), the use of ongoing assessment and flexible grouping makes this a successful approach to instruction.
By analyzing pre- assessment data, teachers can decide if standards should be taught differently to different groups
Flexible Groupings
Assessment data can be used to place students into instructional groups

A. Differentiating Instruction
A fourth-grade teacher uses assessment data to put students in flexible groupings for guided reading and word study. She meets with the highest-need group five times per week and the lowest-need group three times per week. This is an example of

In your chemistry lab, you mix baking soda and vinegar in a beaker. You carefully find the mass of the baking soda and vinegar you use in the reaction. However, after you are done with the reaction, you find that the product of the reaction has much less mass than the combined mass of the reactants. Evaluate your results. Are they correct? How might you perform this reaction again to make sure?
