Phoneme
The smallest unit of sound
The individual sounds in words called phonemes
Phonological Awareness
A meta-cognitive skills (the ability to think about thinking) for the sound-structures of language
The ability to identify, remember, discriminate and manipulate sounds in spoken language
This includes at the phoneme, syllable, word, and sentence levels
Only involves sound (no written symbols, letters, or words)
Phonological Awareness Levels
Phoneme level: What is the first sound in "chair"?
Syllable level: What is the last syllable in the word "happiness"
Word level: Tell me a word that rhymes with "saw."
Sentence level: How many words are in this sentence: "How are you today?"
Phonological Awareness Skills
Change /c/ in cat to make a new sound
Bat, mat, hat, etc.
Breaking words into onsets and rimes
Blending and segmenting phonemes
Phonemic Awareness
The understanding that words are made of individual sounds, called phonemes
Phonemic Awareness Skills
Identifying beginning (initial), middle (medial), and ending (final) sounds in words
Phoneme identification: find the common sound in these words: chair, rich, change
Phoneme characterization: Which word doesn't belong in this group? Hat, hair, ball, hit
Blending: Put phonemes together to make a word /i/ /f/
Phoneme deletion: take the /c/ out of cat
Phoneme substitution: change the first sound in cat
