Structured- stimulated conversations with the clinician that allow the patient to reflect on problems they may have
Unstructured- conversations with conversational partners that can be evaluated by the clinician during/after
Why is it important to include significant others in assesment?
They may have anxiety or emotions related to the difficulty experienced by their partner, and may have to assist the other partner in communicating. A significant other can also experience activity limitations, participation restrictions, and social isolation because of the patient with hearing loss.
How can communication strategies training be implemented into therapy?
Simple handouts- communication strategy handouts; helpful hints on how to communicate better
Can be used as one component in a larger AR plan:
Can include information on facilitative and repair strategies
Can be implemented into role-playing, paper/pencil exercises, and repair strategies
Should take into account the needs, lifestyle, expectations of the client
What is self-efficacy?
person's belief that he/she can succeed despite outside circumstances. Empowerment through the knowledge of how to problem solve.
What are some ways to promote self efficacy?
Mastery experience- they have a challenge, they implement the strategy, and overcome the challenge. This leads to confidence.
Vicarious experience- Through another person, watching someone else overcome a challenge with communication and seeing them succeed with the strategies.
Verbal persuasion- reinforcing with verbal praise, coaching "you can do this"
Emotional arousal- the stress associated with a certain situation. The stress is going to be higher with someone with poor self efficacy, and there emotional arousal is going to higher as well
