Terms in this set (11)
what is BMI and how is it used?
body mass index: a way to express anount of body fat from bidy weight by compensating height
- used as an easy measurement for correlation if body fat to health
what is the most important adipokine? and what suggests it is important?
leptin- mutations of hormones and receptor in humans cause obesity (is rare), in case of lepton mutations —> can be reversed with leptin injections
what are the hypothermic pathways that control energy intake in stores regulation?
POMC neurons and AgRP neurons
role of POMC neurons
promote satiety, anorexogenic, decrease appetite, increase leptin, increase insulin, decrease AgRP
role of AgRP neurons
stimulate increased feeding, increase gherkin, orexigenic, increase hunger decreases satiety
which pathway is the default, what does that mean?
orexigenic, AgRP. in absence of strong regulation is is the dominant pathway
how is each pathway controlled and by what hormones?
POMC pos- regulated by leptin and insulin; neg- regulated by AgRP neurons
AgRP inhibited by leptin, insulin, and satiety proteins from GI system (ghrelin and high reward system in brain stimulate AgRP pathway)
quality or state of being fed or satisfied
stimulates appetite or energy intake
inhibits hunger and energy intake
what is the physiological compensatory mechanism used to "defend the highest weight achieved"?
reduction in energy intake or increase voluntary energy expenditures are compensated for by decreasing involuntary energy out (protects energy stores from starvation)
