Eur nations recieved loans from US (the only country that came out of WW! in better financial shape)
What happened to Eur monarchies after the war?
They were overthrown and turned into democracies; however, they had little experience with this and it ended

1. too many political parties
2. Lacked strong democratic tradition
2. millions blamed the Weimar republic, not the wartime leaders, for the country's defeat and humiliation by the Versailles Treaty

Germany printed more money instead of increasing taxes during war -> Germany's defeat caused money to lose value -> needed to pay reparations bc of VT -> printed more money -> severe inflation

Kellogg-Briand peace pact (almost every country signed to renounce war as an instrument of national policy)
Why did the US economy collapse? (1929)
1. Uneven distribution of wealth (families too poor to buy goods from profitable factories -> factories reduced production -> laid off workers)
2. Overproduction by business and agriculture: scientific method and new machinery = greater crop yields; comp from Eur and Australia drove prices down -> farmers couldn't sell crops for profits -> couldn't pay off bank loans -> weakened banks
Why did the stock market crash in 1929?
booming ecomony -> ppl rushed to buy shares and many borrowed loan from a stockbrocker
investors lost confidence in the market and rushed to sell their shares but no one wanted to buy them
Great Depression (1933)
1/4 americans were unemployed (big factor was the stock market crashing)
What was the effect of the Great Depression worldwide?
1. America withdrew investments from Eur and demanded repayment of the loans
2. America placed high tarriffs on foreugn goods _ other countries did the same -> world trade decreased by 65% and unemployment rates soared

Voters elect a multiparty coalition called national gov -> Britain was able to perserve its democracy
Even thoguh France was heavily dependant on agriculture

then The Popular Front (communists, socialists, and moderates coalition) formed and passed but didnt work
