What is homeostasis? Then, explain and give an example of homeostasis that was discussed this semester.
Homeostasis is the maintenance of the body's stable internal environment.
One example of homeostasis that we discussed this semester was the maintenance of blood pressure.
If someone's blood pressure was to increase above normal levels...
-The stimulus would be this increase in blood pressure
-Baroreceptors in the carotid sinus would detect the increased blood pressure and begin to fire action potentials at a faster rate
-The impulses from the baroreceptors travel to the medulla of the brainstem for integration
-Finally autonomic centers in the medulla oblongata inhibit sympathetic activity, which causes vasodilation and decreased heart rate
-Blood pressure would return to normal levels and the medulla would also decrease its response
List and define the big ideas of biology.
The big ideas of biology are...
-Evolution: the diversity of life that evolved over time by process of mutation, natural selection, and genetic change
-Structure and Function: Basic units of structure define the function of all living things
-Information flow, exchange & storage: the growth and behavior of organisms are activated through the expression of genetic information in context
-Pathways & transformations of energy & matter: biological systems grow and change by processes based upon chemical transformation pathways and are governed by the laws of thermodynamics
-Systems: living systems are interconnected and interacting
State where each big idea was seen this semester
-Structure and Function: seminiferous tubules and them being the area of spermatogenesis
-Information flow, exchange, & storage:
-Pathways & transformation of energy & matter:
-Systems: Comparison of endocrine and nervous system (nervous system uses neurotransmitters and effects are immediate while endocrine system uses hormones and effects last seconds, hours, or days)
