Era of Good Feelings
Definition: It was a period after the War of 1812 in which Americans had a strong sense of unity and desire for peace.
Significance: It was a decade of almost peace and calm, which allowed for a lot of advancements to take place, such as the Monroe Doctrine.
Definition: Sectionalism was a loyalty to the interest of your region over the nation, and Nationalism was a loyalty to the interest of your country over your section.
Significance: Nationalism was unifying the country at the same time Sectionalism was tearing it apart.
Clay's American System
Definition: It contained of tariffs to promote local industries, a national bank to foster commerce, and subsidies for infrastructure.
Significance: It had a large contribution to the shaping of economic policy in the first half of the 19th century.
Panic of 1819
Definition: It was the first widespread financial crisis of the US
Significance: It led to a collapse of the American economy.
McCulloch vs. Maryland (1819)
Definition: Maryland tried to tax the Second National Bank, which the court deemed could not be done.
Significance: It established Congress legislative power and its interactions with other legislatures.
Gibbons vs. Ogden (1821)
Definition: Ogden held a state granted license for a monopoly over New York waters, but Gibbons held a federal license for permission for the waters.
Significance: It granted the Supreme Court the power to regulate interstate commerce.
Missouri Compromise (1820)
Definition: It was a legislature that admitted Maine as a free state and Missouri as a slave state in order to maintain the balance
Significance: It admitted two new states into the US
Rush-Bagot Treaty (1817)
Definition: It was a treaty between the US and Britain that limited naval armaments on the Great Lakes.
Significance: It eased tensions between the countries and possibly prevented another war.
Adams-Onis (Florida Purchase) Treaty (1819)
Definition: It was a treaty between the US and Spain that gave teg US the state of Florida
Significance: It added a new state to the US
Monroe Doctrine (1823)
Definition: It was a US policy that announced that the US would leave Britain and France alone but would also not tolerate their actions towards them on the Western Hemisphere.
Significance: It stopped Europe from interfering with American affairs, but ultimately did not stop the US interference in European actions.
National Road/Erie Canal
National Road - The first major highway built by the federal government.
Erie Canal - A canal that stretched through New York.
Significance: They were both major advances in transportation that helped merchants and civilians get around.
Robert Fulton; Steamboats/Eli Whitney; Interchangeable Parts; cotton gin
Robert Fulton - He invented the commercial steamboat.
Eli Whitney - He invented the system of being able to swap out parts for other versions of them, allowing for mass production, and the cotton gin which significantly improved the rate at which cotton was spun.
The steamboat was a major advancement in transportation that is still used occasionally today, and the interchangeable parts is still used all over the world in mass production. The cotton gin was a massive improvement towards production of cotton.
Lowell System (Factory System)
Definition: It was a labor production tool that allowed for manufacturing to be done under one roof and be performed by women.
Significance: It had major advancements in mass production and female rights.
Definition: It was a massive development of progress in the 19th century towards the economy.
Significance: It sparked explosive economic growth and large personal wealth, but also larger amounts of lower class workers.
