Describe Open Pit Mining
A giant hole is dug up in order to extract the ore. It removes a large amount of the desired ore, however it also extracts other ores along the process.
Pros and cons of Open Pit mining
It is large enough for men and machinery to move about, is cost efficient and safe compared to open shaft mining. Cons: Leads to habitat loss, creates large holes in the ground and those holes allow water to drain into them where they could become acidic.
Describe Placer Mining
Separating many metals with water.
Pros and cons of Placer mining
Pros: Provides jobs. Cons: pollutes water, destroys habitats, vast water usage and causes erosion.
Describe Strip Mining
Horizontal stem, large machines are used to take layers off the ground in order to extract the ore.
Describe Subsurface mining
Strips under the surface, they create deep shafts to extract the ore.
Pros and cons of Subsurface mining
Pros: faster, cheaper and reduces habitat loss.
Cons: dangerous, unnatural gas explosions, toxic and tunnel collapses are probable.
Describe Mountain Top mining
Clear cut trees and blow the mountain up. The excess rock is placed in the valley.
Pros and cons of Mountain Top mining
Pros: quick, cheap and creates jobs.
Cons: causes erosion, habitat loss, clogs up rivers and acid drainage can occur.
