Industrial Revolution
A series of improvements in industrial technology that transformed the process of manufacturing goods.
Agrarian Revolution
A change in farming methods that allowed for a greater production of food. This revolution was fueled by the use of new farming technology such as the seed drill and improved fertilizers. The result of this revolution was a population explosion due to the higher availability of food. It was one of the causes of the Industrial Revolution.
Child Labor
Children were viewed as laborers throughout the 19th century. Many children worked on farms, small businesses, mills and factories.
Labor Unions and Strikes
Labor unions were groups of workers who wanted to obtain better working conditions, strikes were held in order to obtain such conditions.
Effects of the Industrial Revolution
Everyday goods are mass produced and cheaper, workers are exploited, workers go on strike, lower class moves into cities and are exploited, better roads/bridges/canals
Urbanization
An increase in the percentage and in the number of people living in urban settlements.
Imperialism
A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.
Colonies
lands that are controlled by another nation
White Man's Burden
idea that many European countries had a duty to spread their religion and culture to those less civilized
Social Darwinism
The belief that only the fittest survive in human political and economic struggle.
Berlin Conference
A meeting from 1884-1885 at which representatives of European nations agreed on rules colonization of Africa
Treaty of Nanjing
1842, ended Opium war, said the western nations would determine who would trade with china, so it set up the unequal treaty system which allowed western nations to own a part of chinese territory and conduct trading business in china under their own laws; this treaty set up 5 treaty ports where westerners could live, work, and be treated under their own laws; one of these were Hong Kong.
Opium War (1839-1842)
War between Britain and China over trading rights, particularly Britain's desire to continue selling opium to Chinese traders. The resulting trade agreement prompted Americans to seek similar concessions from the Chinese.
Sepoy Mutiny
The revolt against the British by many different groups across India 1857 but led particularly by some of the disgruntled Indian soldiers working for the British. It caused the British government to take over more direct control of India from the British East India Company.
King Leopold II
King of Belgium (r. 1865-1909). He was active in encouraging the exploration of Central Africa and became the infamous ruler of the Congo Free State (to 1908).
