First learn what they like, then talk business
A good way to get in with mill representatives is to go tour their mill. Learn what they want to buy.
While there, look at what they are actually buying. We want to push the specs.
In other words, if they buy to 7 inch top we want to push 6 inch top.

When dealing with mill reps you need to know
what other suppliers are getting paid.
Trade tract
Reps put out prices per ton delivered from certain tracts.
(trade tracts typically expire before you can get all of the timber cut unless you can get this in writing)
In order to get the best deals
Have a good relationship with the mill
Our biggest advantage as a company is
We have plenty of our own land to cut. When they give us good prices we can cut ours.
Knowing the market will result in good deals
For example, right now all the mills are making huge profits off of PP and PST, so they can afford to pay us more.
When it is very wet and rainy, mills will throw out short term money. When they do this, you should
try to get them to extend the time period. They will usually make concessions when they are low in inventory.

"Code the Load"
*All loads should have the following product code painted on the butt end of a stem in the load. If a load is not coded properly, the supplier will be given the opportunity to code the load properly. Failure to code the load will result in an automatic downgrade to the lowest grade.

Quality Requirements: Any stems not meeting stated specifications will be subject to weight deductions, downgrade, or rejection. Loads with greater than 20% of total stems containing any defects listed below will be rejected
- unacceptable species (VV Various)
- stems over max. butt size (OO Oversized)
- stems under min. top size (SS Small Tops)
- stems over max. length (LL Over Length)
- stems under min. length (MM Short)
- scars, cat faces, or decay greater than 1.5" in depth
(RR Rot/Scars)
- sharp crooks or abnormal shape (CC Crooks)
- stems with 7'' min top can't have sweep bigger than 3'' in any 16ft section, for 8'' tops or bigger it's 4 in max sweep (CC Sweep)
- stems containing knots larger than 4'', stems with 3 knots in one section (KK Knot)
- stems with forks or double heart (FF Fork/Double Heart)
- no stems without limbs being trimmed flush to the tree ( TT Trim)
- stems with splits, tears, pulls (BB Broken/Split)
