Psoas bursa sits between
iliofemoral and pubofemoral ligament
Iliofemoral ligament Attachments
AIIS (most inferior aspect)
Intertrochanteric line
Ischiofemoral ligament Attachments
Ischial part of acetabular rim
Femoral neck
Pubofemoral ligament Attachments
Obturator crest and superior ramus of pubis
Intertrochanteric line
Medial circumflex femoral artery is important because
it is the primary blood supplier to the head and neck of the femur in adults
Just prior to the adductor hiatus, the ______artery branches off of the femoral artery
descending genicular
Glut max
PA: Ilium posterior to posterior gluteal line, dorsal surface of sacrum and coccyx, and sacrotuberous ligament.
DA: ITB and gluteal tuberosity of femur.
N: Inferior gluteal (L5, S1, S2).
A: Extends and externally rotates hip.
Glut Med
PA: External surface of ilium between anterior and posterior gluteal lines.
DA: Lateral surface of greater trochanter of femur.
N: Superior gluteal n. (L5, S1).
A: Anterior fibers: abduct, flex, and internally rotate the hip.
Posterior fibers: abduct, extend, and externally rotate the hip.
Glut min
PA: External surface of ilium between anterior and inferior gluteal lines.
DA: Anterior surface of greater trochanter of femur.
N: Superior gluteal n. (L5, S1).
A: Abducts and internally rotates hip.
TFL
PA: ASIS and anterior part of iliac crest.
DA: Iliotibial band.
N: Superior gluteal n. (L5, S1).
A: Abducts, internally rotates, and flexes hip. Can assist with knee flexion/extension (via its insertion into ITB).
Note: The IT band inserts into Gerdy's tubercle.
Piriformis
PA: Anterior surface of sacrum and sacrotuberous ligament.
DA: Superior border of greater trochanter of femur.
N: Branches of anterior rami (S1, S2).
A: Externally rotates hip below 60 degrees flexion; internally rotates hip above 90 degrees flexion. Stabilizes femoral head in acetabulum.
Obturator internus
N: Nerve to obturator internus and superior gemellus (L5, S1).
A: Externally rotates extended hip and abducts flexed hip; stabilizes femoral head in acetabulum.
Obturator externus
PA: Margins of obturator foramen and obturator membrane.
DA: Medial surface of greater trochanter (trochanteric fossa) of femur.
N: Obturator n. (L3, L4).
A: Externally rotates hip; stabilizes femoral head in acetabulum.
Superior Gemellus
N: Nerve to obturator internus and superior gemellus (L5, S1).
A: Externally rotates extended hip and abducts flexed hip; stabilizes femoral head in acetabulum.
inferior Gemellus
N: Nerve to quadratus femoris and inferior gemellus (L5, S1).
A: Externally rotates extended hip and abducts flexed hip; stabilizes femoral head in acetabulum.
