criteria
disinhibited social engagement disorder
a pattern of behavior in which a child actively approaches and interacts with unfamiliar adults and exhibits 2+:
reduced reservance in approaching unfamiliar adults
overly familiar verbal or physical behavior
absent checking back with adult caregiver after venturing away
willingness to go off with unfamiliar adult with little/ no hesitation
child has experienced a pattern of extremes of insufficient care
treatment for disinhibited social engagement disorder
enhanced caregiving
small number of caregivers to allow for development and consolidation of appropriate attachments
the sooner the child is removed from a deprived environment the better the outcome
Occurs after a traumatic event in which the individual believes he or she is in physical danger or that his or her life is in jeopardy
or after witnessing a life threatening event happening to someone else
PTSD
PTSD criteria
exposure to actual or threatened death, injury, or sexual violence
intrusion symptoms associated with the traumatic event
persistent avoidance of stimuli
negative alterations in cognitions and mood associated w the event
marked alterations in arousal and reactivity
disturbances for more than one month
PTSD with delayed expression
full diagnostic criteria are not met until at least 6 months after the event
how to treat PTSD
SSRI/ anti-anxiety meds
psychodynamic approach to therapy
cognitive-behavioral therapy
eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR)
Occurs after the same type stressors that cause PTSD with symptoms less than 1 month
acute stress disorder
criteria:
acute stress disorder
same as PTSD
presence of 9 or more of the following sx for any of the five categories of intrusion, negative mood, dissociation, avoidance, or arousal, beginning or worsening after the traumatic event occurred
duration is 3 days to 1 month after the trauma
maladaptive reactions to clearly defined life stress
