What is geopolitics?

A states power to control a state or territory as well as to shape the foreign policy of other nations

What is a state (in geopolitics)?

Independent political (not homogeneous) unit with recognizable boundaries

What is a nation (geopolitics)?

Group of people sharing a culture but no recognizable boundaries

What is a nation-state (geopolitics)?

Homogeneous group of people that are governed by their own state with defined boundaries

What are the different types of borders and boundaries discussed in class and the book?

Inclusionary, Exclusionary

What purpose does Inclusionary serve? Give Example

To control and regulate people inside (Berlin Wall)

What purpose does Exclusionary serve?

To keep people and immigration out.

What are the ways boundaries are layed out?

Straight lines, following natural barriers, forced/exclusionary

Human made because there was no natural boundary to go off of. Usually contested more.

Follow Natural Barriers

Easiest. Follows barriers such as rivers, mountains, oceans.
