Speed
The distance traveled by an object in a given amount of time. Speed is distance traveled in a certain time.
Formula: S=d/t
Distance
The total path length traveled from one point or location to another.
Acceleration
The change in speed and/or direction of an object's motion. Can be positive (speeding up), or negative (slowing down).
Motion
A change in position, measured by distance and time.
Velocity
The measurement of the rate and direction of change in the position of an object. Velocity is a quantity that measures speed and gives direction.
Formula: Speed + Direction
Newton
A unit of force, usually expressed in Joules.
Force
A push or pull- Forces can be represented with arrows called vectors. Vectors show the direction and magnitude of a force.
Unbalanced Force
When the net force on an object does not equal zero. Unbalanced forces change the speed or direction of an object's motion.
Net Force
The net force acting on an object is the sum of the forces onto the object, taking into account their sizes and directions. For example, if an object has two forces acting on it, with equal sizes but in opposite directions, then the net force will be zero.
FORMULA: Net force = Mass x Acceleration (F=MA)
Work
Something done as a result of effort or exertion.
FORMULA: Work is Force times distance (W=Fd)
Gravity
The force that attracts an object toward the center of the Earth.
Frame of Reference
The point from which movement is determined.
Inertia
The tendency of an object in motion to remain in motion, or an object at rest to remain at rest, unless acted upon by a force.
Weight
The effect of gravity on an object's mass.
FORMULA: Weight = Mass x Gravity
Momentum
The product of the mass of an object and its velocity.
Displacement
The distance between two locations measured along the shortest path connecting them, in a specified location.
Balanced Forces
When net force on an object is zero and there is no change in speed or direction.
Friction
A force that slows down motion when two objects are in contact, usually produces heat.
