Science
A way of learning about the natural world.
What skills do scientists use?
Observing, inferring, predicting, classifying and making models
Observing
Using one or more of your senses to gather information.
Quantitative observations
Deal with a number or amount.
Qualitative observations
observations that deal with descriptions that cannot be expressed in numbers
Inferring
when you explain or interpret the things you observe
Predicting
making a forecast of what will happen in the future based on past experience or evidence
Classifying
The process of grouping together items that are alike in some way
Making models
creating representations of complex objects or processes
Life science
The study of living things
Scientific inquiry
The diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on evidence they gather.
Hypothesis
A possible explanation for a set of observations or answer to a scientific question.
What does it mean that a hypothesis must be testable?
that you must be able to do an experiment and collect data that will support or disprove the hypothesis
Variable
A factor that changes in an experiment in order to test a hypothesis
Controlled experiment
an experiment in which only one variable is manipulated at a time
Manipulated variable
The one factor that a scientist changes during an experiment; also called independent variable.
Responding variable
the factor that may change in response to the manipulated variable
Operational definition
A statement that describes how to measure a variable or define a term
Data
facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through observations
What is a conclusion?
a summary of what you have learned from an experiment
Communicating
The sharing of ideas and experimental findings with others through writing and speaking
What characteristics do successful scientists possess?
Curiosity, honesty, open-mindedness, skepticism, and creativity.
Technology
how people change the world around them to meet their needs and solve practical problems.
What three things does technology include?
1.Technology includes the things people make 2. It consists of the knowledge needed to design those products 3. It includes the processes that get products to the people who use them.
What is the goal of technology?
to improve the way people live
What is the difference between science and technology?
Science studies the world to see how it functions. Technology changes or modifies the natural world to meet human needs or solve problems.
What is an engineer?
Someone who is trained to use both technological and scientific knowledge to solve practical problems.
What helps you stay safe during any scientific investigation?
Good preparation helps you stay safe when doing science activities.
When should preparing for a lab begin?
Preparing for a lab should begin the day before you will perform the lab.
