different types of connective tissue and function
Terms in this set (17)
Provides elasticity. Ex: Supports the internal ear. (Blue dye, looks like clouds on the quiz)
fat! protects you and keeps you warm
Description: Red and while cells in a fluid matrix (plasma)
Function: Transport of respiratory gasses, nutrients, wastes, etc.
Location: Contained within blood vessels
dense regular connective tissue
Cells are fibroblasts. Ex: Tendons, Ligaments, both have poor blood supply.
Function: Supports and reinforces, serves as a cushion, and resists compressive stress
Location: Forms embryonic skeleton, covers the end of long bones
Highly compressible. Ex: forms cushion like discs between vertebrate
elastic connective tissue
Function: Allows recoil of tissues following stretching, allows pulsating flow through arterial walls
Location: Walls of the large arteries
reticular connective tissue
Structure: Ground substance is gel-like liquid
Function: Provides supportive framework for spleen
Location: Forms scaffolding of most organs
areolar connective tissue
Most distributed connective tissue. Wraps around organs to cushion and hold in place. Soft, pliable. Contains all fiber types and soaks up excess fluids.
Dense irregular connective
Location:deep reticular region of skin, bond, cartilage, joints, various organs
the strongest and most abundant type of fiber and allow connective tissue to withstand tension
seen as long black fibers in connective tissue. Allow tissues to return to normal shape after deformation.
Always look like black meshwork, has many branches. Found inside organs, lymph nodes, thymus and thyroid.
Adipocytes (fat cells)
