What is a corneal abrasion?
A corneal abrasion is a superficial scratch on the clear, protective "window" at the front of your eye (cornea)
A patient complains of repeated corneal abrasions occurring in the mornings upon awakening and chronic dry eyes, what should you consider?
Sjögren syndrome. This condition causes dysfunction in tear production and is predominantly seen in females.
Signs and symptoms of corneal abrasion
Signs and symptoms of corneal abrasion include:
● Tearing eye
● Red/painful eye
● Pain goes away w/ ophthalmic analgesic drops
Diagnosis of corneal abrasion?
Record visual acuity, slit lamp/wood's lamp with fluorescein stain exam will reveal epithelial detect +/- foreign body
Management of corneal abrasion/foreign body
1. Check visual acuity
2. For surface foreign bodies, irrigation or removal with a damp, cotton-tipped swab or a small needle
3. Do NOT patch (if large or contact wearers)
4. Antibiotic drops
5. F/u with ophthalmology in 24 hours
