After many attempts by other animals the muskrat finally retrieves dirt for the woman. The woman then is able to create the earth and all of its plants using the roots and dirt. The animals not only save the woman's life, they also help her create the world.

The grandmother and her daughter walked around the earth. By walking around the earth the two women would help the earth and its plants to continue growing. The daughter also gave birth to the left and right hand twin. These twins would create land-animals and bring a balance of good and evil to the world.

The outcome of the battles between the two twins is that the right hand twin kills the left hand twin with deer antlers. After the right hand twin kills his brother, he hurls his brothers "dead" body of the edge of the earth.

The grandmother is killed and turned into the moon. The grandmother, who's head became the moon, favors the left hand son who rules the night. Therefore, the author described the moon as the grandmother watching down on her favorite grandchild.

The coyote is punished for being greedy in the story when he tries to eat the calf; a woman takes his soup and birds steal his meat.
