3. Applied water and toothpaste to toothbrush.
4. Brushed teeth, gums, and tongue gently:
a. Front teeth: brushed upper, then lower teeth, outside surfaces then inside. Used entire brush surface and started brushing at the gum line.
b. Outside of side teeth: held toothbrush at 45-degree angle, brushed upper then lower teeth, rolled brush away from the gum line.
c. Inside of side teeth: brushed upper then lower teeth, rolled brush away from gums.
d. Chewing surfaces of teeth: brushed upper then lower teeth, used back-and-forth motion
e. Tongue: brushed from front to back and used gauze to hold tongue if needed.
5. Cleaned any specialized dental devices appropriately.
6. Notified dentist if patient complains of sensitivities or shows signs of tooth decay.
7. Removed equipment from patient's mouth if patient coughs or gags.
8. Stopped to clean wound if caregiver is bitten during the procedure.
9. Had patient rinse mouth with water and spit into emesis basin. Repeat

Patients with dentures

2. Raised bed to comfortable working height; lowered side rail; raised head of bed, placed towel across patient's chest; applied nonsterile gloves.
3. Partially filled denture cup with water, removed lower then upper dentures with gauze, and placed in denture cup.
4. Used gentle side-to-side rocking motion to release suction if necessary to remove dentures.
5. Notified dentist if dentures display any cracks or breaks.
6. Applied water and toothpaste to toothbrush.
7. Brushed teeth, gums, and tongue appropriately.
8. Had patient rinse mouth with water and spit into emesis basin. Repeat.
9. Offered mouthwash; instructed patient to swish, gargle, and spit into basin; dried patient's mouth; raised side rail.
10. Placed towel in sink; Brushed dentures over towel.
11. Brushed remaining surface; rinsed patient's mouth; placed dentures into fresh water in the denture cup.
12. Lowered side rail, applied denture adhesive if needed, inserted dentures appropriately, and offered patient water.
13. Dried patient's mouth and offered lubricant for lips.

Unconscious patient
1. Prepared supplies if not performed as part of a bed bath; raised bed to working height; lowered top side rail.
2. Lowered head of bed if tolerated; positioned patient appropriately; placed towel alongside patient's face; placed emesis basin alongside patient's mouth; applied nonsterile gloves.
3. Applied water and toothpaste to toothbrush.
4. Delegated work appropriately based on presence of patient's gag reflex
5. Brushed teeth, gums, and tongue properly.
6. Cleaned oral tissues with disposable oral swabs, using new swab for each area.
7. Removed excess water from oral cavity using a bulb syringe or Yankauer suction catheter.
8. Dried patient's mouth; lubricated lips if needed.
Occupied bed
1. Prepared supplies on bedside table or chair; positioned bed appropriately.
2. Lowered head and foot of bed; untucked top sheet at foot of bed; placed a bath blanket over the patient.
3. Removed top sheet from under bath blanket; held linens away from you; placed them in a laundry bag.
4. Assisted patient onto side facing away from self; loosened corners of the bottom sheet; rolled sheet in toward patient's back.
5. Repositioned mattress if needed; cleaned mattress if appropriate
6. Applied fitted sheet to one side of bed; tucked in corners; fan-folded remaining half and tucked under the dirty linens.
7. Applied waterproof pad and/or drawsheet if required.
8. Raised side rail; rolled patient over to opposite side; walked around bed.
9. Lowered side rail; folded dirty linens inward into a bundle; held linens away from self; placed in a laundry bag; removed dirty gloves and washed hands.
10. Unfolded and smoothed bottom sheet, waterproof pad, and/or drawsheet from under patient.
11. Tucked in corners of the fitted sheet; tucked drawsheet under the mattress.
12. Raised top side rail; rolled patient onto his or her back.
13. Placed top sheet over patient with hems facing up; removed bath blanket; placed blanket or bedspread with hems facing down.
14. Used mitered corners; tucked top sheet and blanket together.
15. Turned down top sheet over edge of blanket to make a cuff
16. Applied pillowcase:
a. Grasped closed end of pillowcase; pulled pillowcase inside out.
b. Grasped center edge of pillow with the same hand.
c. Slid pillowcase around the pillow.
17. Placed pillow on bed with open end away from the door.
