THE HOST:
Long monologue....
So, in the spirit of Ibsen, let's see what happens when a true believer, a life-liar is pulled in one direction by an enabler...
(lights up on Richey, frozen)
THE HOST:
... And in the opposite direction by a skeptic?
(Lights up on Laura, also frozen)
(Richey unfreezes, and records a video on his phone)
RICHEY:
Greetings true-believers and skeptics alike. This is your favorite psychic, medium, and paranormal expert, Richey Otis with an exciting update. A client has just hired me to investigate the famed haunted train tracks in San Antonio, Texas, a noted hub of paranormal activity. I will also be holding a book signing and a special spiritual reading event while I'm there, so visit my website to get your tickets while they last! Thank you, and as always, farewell until I see you again, in this life or the next.
THE HOST:
Good evening. On tonight's program, a man claims that he can communicate with the spirits of the dead.
(Richey appears on stage. He holds one hand to his hand and the other up in the air. He is concentrating dramatically.)
THE HOST:
They use these gifts to grand people peace of mind about their lost loved ones, or to help people reconcile with their departed loved, or terminally ill people settle old scores and find peace with mortality.
(The ghost children bring The Host a costume signifier for Laura's mother, Margaret)
I'm Laura's mom now. This actually happened by the way.
RICHEY:
Do you hear the spirits, Margaret?
THE HOST:
I do! Hello Auntie. And Dad! I can't wait to see you all again.
RICHEY:
They love you, Margaret.
THE HOST:
I could have real, true peace? No more sickness or pain?
RICHEY:
Indeed, my dear.
THE HOST:
And what about my little girl? What about my Laura?
RICHEY:
You will always be by her side. And if she so desires, I can connect you to her from beyond.
THE HOST:
I'll set some money aside for you in my will so she won't need to worry about paying you.
RICHEY:
You're too kind.
(Richey exits)
THE HOST:
That's all okay. The only thing we need to agree on is that some significant amount of people DO believe in ghosts for various reasons. That's where people like this dude come in.
(Richey waves)
BOBBY:
I'll think about it. But you'll have your work cut out for you.
(Laura walks away. Lights down on Bobby and his tent. Lights up on Richey in a different area of the stage. He is holding his phone up looking for a signal. Laura walks into his space. She recognizes him immediately. She is stunned for a moment. But then she goes to him.)
LAURA:
Richey Otis.
RICHEY:
Oh. Yes! Psychic, Medium, and --
LAURA:
Paranormal expert. Yeah, I know.
RICHEY:
Yes! At your service, madam. And who might you be?
LAURA:
Aren't you psychic?
RICHEY:
Ha! You're a sharp one. I suppose I should read your mind for your name?
LAURA:
Laura. Laura Lee.
RICHEY:
Laura.
LAURA:
Ring a bell?
RICHEY:
Have we met?
LAURA:
Not exactly. But you met my mother. Her name was Margaret.
RICHEY:
Her name WAS Margaret.
LAURA:
Sound familiar?
RICHEY:
Why yes, I've had a Margaret in my ear for the last--
LAURA:
Okay, I'll stop you right there. Bobby Allen is down that way. Just past the end of the pavement, in a blue tent. It's kind of hidden from here.
RICHEY:
Bobby Allen? You know about--
LAURA:
I guess I could be psychic too.
RICHEY:
Oh ho ho! A new challenger!
LAURA:
Okay, let's just cut the bullshit. You're a con artist. A fraud. You're exploiting a severely damaged and vulnerable person.
RICHEY:
Young lady, if you think you are telling me anything I haven't heard a thousand times, you are mistaken. I am very sorry that you don't believe but --
LAURA:
Spirits aren't real. You steal people's money and you give them lies. It's a scam.
RICHEY:
It is no scam. I have a skill. I deserve to be paid for that skill. Robert Allen saw my price estimates on my website, he contacted me with an offer, and I accepted it. That is all.
LAURA:
Well, let's see how many people are willing to pay you once this gets out.
(Laura rummages for her laptop again. She shows Richey a video, muted and away from the audience)
RICHEY:
(Chuckling) That's quite funny.
LAURA:
Watch til the end, come on.
RICHEY:
I don't need to.
LAURA:
Don't play cool. You know what this will do to you.
RICHEY:
And I also know what it would do to you. Young lady, why do you think that footage never aired?
(Laura is stopped dead in her tracks)
You didn't think abut that, did you? Well, rest assured that if you release that footage, it will be the end of your career.
LAURA:
Career?
RICHEY:
The spirits have informed me that you work in media.
LAURA:
Spare me the bullshit. You're just cold reading me.
RICHEY:
Call it what you like. You'll only hurt yourself.
LAURA:
I can always leak it online.
RICHEY:
Be my guest. Honestly, why didn't you just do that from the comfort of your home? There's an internet full of people who would be delighted to laugh at me. And I'm still not scared.
LAURA:
I wanted to see your face when I take you down.
RICHEY:
Take me down? Oh my. Well. My face is here. Please do take me down soon if that is your intention. I am rather busy.
LAURA:
Oh I will. Just wait.
(Short pause. Then Richey chuckles and puts a hand to his head. Laura moves toward the exit.)
RICHEY:
Hmmm. I'm sensing that you already met my client, Robert Allen. You tried to show this video, but he did not react as you hoped he would.
LAURA:
You don't know shit.
RICHEY:
I'm very good at what I do.
LAURA:
So am I. And I'm gonna make sure that you don't hurt anyone else ever again. And I don't care what happens to my "career."
RICHEY:
Very well then. What did you say your name was?
LAURA:
Laura. Laura Lee. And you...
(She doesn't quite know what to do, but she moves in very close to him)
You will not forget me a second time. I promise you that.
(Light change)
(Richey wanders into the space near the tent. Bobby's space. Master Trunkus, the stuffed elephant is somewhere visible)
(Richey looks around, unsure what to do. He looks at his phone to check GPS. He sees Bobby's tent. He gets into character)
RICHEY:
Yes spirit. Yes, I'm still here. Thank you. Yes. I can hear you. Is this the place?
(Bobby stirs inside the tent and peeks his head out)
Is this the place you wanted me to come to? What is here?
(Bobby steps out of the tent and dusts some left over baby powder off of his chest)
Are you leading me to Robert Allen?
BOBBY:
You can call me Bobby.
RICHEY:
Oh! I'm so sorry that I didn't see you there.
BOBBY:
No worries.
RICHEY:
It takes a great deal of focus and concentration to connect with the spirits.
BOBBY:
I can imagine. Anyway, thanks for coming.
RICHEY:
It's my pleasure, Bobby. Richey Otis, at your service.
BOBBY:
This is wild. I remember watching your TV specials when I was a kid. The spirits told you I was here, huh?
RICHEY:
Yes. I felt a very powerful spiritual connection to this place. I see now that it's because you were already here.
BOBBY:
Oh yeah. I spend a lot of time here these days. You know what, let me get your check right now. Hold up.
RICHEY:
Oh that's not necessary just yet.
BOBBY:
Half up front and half after, no?
RICHEY:
Yes, but let's just chat for now. Get to know each other.
(Richey suddenly makes a large, dramatic, full-body movement, as if stricken by some unseen force. Looks like bullshit. The Ghost Children look around like "What is this a-hole doing?)
BOBBY:
Nance, I'm glad you're here. Watch this.
RICHEY:
Bobby! There is a powerful force at work here. So powerful, it can only be the power of LOVE.
BOBBY:
Shhhh. He's talking to --
RICHEY:
Yes, I can feel it now. It's Shane. Your son Shane.
BOBBY:
In a minute.
RICHEY:
I'm seeing a large, prominent letter D. The letter D. Did the letter D mean anything to your son? It could be a hobby, like drawing or dodgeball -- or maybe he was born in December -- A large letter D -- it could be dogs, the Dallas Cowboys, dinosaurs, dancing --
BOBBY:
Yes! He loved dinosaurs. That's gotta be it. That's Shane.
RICHEY:
Yes! Dinosaurs, definitely dinosaurs. He says he wants to play the dinosaur game. Do you know what that means?
NANCY:
Bobby, what five-year-old kid doesn't like dinosaurs? It's an easy guess.
RICHEY:
WAIT! Yes. The d was dinosaur. But it's also... DAD. He is so happy to see you here Bobby. So happy. He loves you.
BOBBY:
Wow. Oh wow. I love you too buddy. Daddy loves you.
(Richey slumps to the floor)
BOBBY:
Whoa. You okay Richey?
RICHEY:
Yes. My apologies. It has been a long day of travel and I fear my body be too tired and famished to maintain a connection without some rest and food.
BOBBY:
Well get on up. I'll take you out to dinner. You wanna come Nance?
RICHEY:
Wait, are you Nancy?
NANCY:
...Yes.
RICHEY:
Right before I lost the connection, Shane talked about his mother. It makes perfect sense now that I know who you are.
BOBBY:
Richey is a guest here. Give him a break.
RICHEY:
Don't mind me. I'm not even here.
(Richey goes about unpacking various vaguely pan-spiritual looking artifacts and trinkets that, as a collection could appeal to as many religious or spiritual traditions without offending anyone. He also sets up something that looks like a large EMF (electromagnetic field) reader, an EVP (electronic voice phenomena) device, and a huge Ouija board. The Ghost Children help. These objects stay on stage.)
NANCY:
Not the kind of help I was thinking of. Take care of yourself, Bobby.
(Bobby goes to help Richey with unpacking, and spreading sacred dust)
BOBBY:
Sorry about that.
RICHEY:
No, no. I'm sorry that I intruded on your private business.
BOBBY:
It's not that private. Don't worry about it.
RICHEY:
Might I make a suggestion?
BOBBY:
Sure. Please do.
RICHEY:
I do apologize if I am overstepping or being too familiar. But... take the case.
BOBBY:
Take the case...
RICHEY:
Yes. I know it may seem profane if you perceive it as "profiting" from your son's death. But that's not what this is.
BOBBY:
What else could it be?
RICHEY:
It's money, yes. But money is time, and time is healing. The more money you have, the more time you can devote to focusing on yourself and your healing process. You deserve that.
BOBBY:
I was hoping having you here could help me with that.
RICHEY:
I will help you a great deal. But there's only so much that a week of my time will buy you. With a settlement in your pocket, there's a lot you can do. Take time off work. Travel. Buy a boat, or an exotic car or what have you. Anything that would help you heal. You could even hire me full-time for some duration, if you wanted to.
BOBBY:
That's not a bad idea.
RICHEY:
I'm just here to help.
BOBBY:
What you did before was amazing. I'm so glad you're here.
RICHEY:
It's my pleasure.
(Bobby remembers that the check is in his pocket. He takes it out)
BOBBY:
This is for you.
RICHEY:
You're too kind. I have a feeling that you, Shane, and I will get along quite nicely.
(Lights change suddenly. Actually scary lighting and sound effects. It feels like hell is splitting open in front of us. The ghost children appear)
BOBBY:
Are you doing this?
RICHEY:
No, but I knew it would happen. I just didn't think it would be so soon.
(Richey's entire body tenses up. He stares convulsing. Then, he levitates before our eyes, still occasionally convulsing. He speaks an unknown language and his voice is amplified and distorted)
JHDFLGUHTLIRTUW;FJVFG;TRHHGIUTE;HWGI
(The wind swirls. The soundscape intensifies. The lights flash and flare. Then suddenly, Richey returns to the ground, the lights go back to normal, the sounds fade away, and the wind dies down. Richey burps)
Hm. Pardon me.
BOBBY:
You okay?
RICHEY:
Yes, I am now. You were saying something about dinner?
BOBBY:
Uh... yeah. Well, you gotta have tacos when you come to San Antonio. Come on.
(They exit)
LAURA:
Okay then.
(They wait)
(Richey enters.)
RICHEY:
Good day! Good day Bobby. And... I see we have company.
LAURA:
Oh it's on.
RICHEY:
These are sensitive matters. The energy of a dedicated skeptic can be quite toxic.
BOBBY:
She's ready to listen.
RICHEY:
Very well, then. Now Bobby, let me show you some of the readings our equipment has picked up.
(He goes to the EMF reader)
LAURA:
Just because there's equipment doesn't make it science.
RICHEY:
This is an electromagnetic field reader. It picks up the disturbances that spirits make in the electromagnetic --
LAURA:
This equipment is for testing home appliances and electronics. It's not made for ghost hunting. Watch.
(Laura puts her cell phone near the EMF reader, and it goes off. She takes her phone away and it stops. Richey moves on)
RICHEY:
Just listen to all the electronic voice phenomena I captured. At 4:07 a.m. a child's voice could clearly be heard saying... "dad."
(Bobby is stricken with hope. Richey presses play. A short recording of mostly white noise plays. Bobby listens intently)
Did you hear that?
LAURA:
I don't hear anything.
(Bobby takes the EVP device and plays the sound again)
LAURA:
I'm not impressed.
RICHEY:
Then allow me to give you another demonstration of my abilities. Bobby, are you ready?
BOBBY:
Let's do it.
RICHEY:
Please sit.
(Richey joins Bobby and Laura on the floor and takes their hands. Laura is not ready for this)
LAURA:
Oh, okay then.
RICHEY:
And now we breathe.
(They breathe together. The wind picks up just a little)
LAURA:
Winds were in the weather forecast.
RICHEY:
Focus. Are there any spirits here with us today?
(Silence. The ghost children fight over the Ouija Board pointer. The wind blows again)
If there are any spirits here with us right now, I ask that you please tell us.
(One of the ghost children takes control of the pointer and points it to "YES." Bobby gasps. The ghost children giggle)
LAURA:
Look I'm not sure EXACTLY how he's faking it, but it's not like it would be hard. Hell, all the Fox sisters needed was an apple tied to a string to convince people that ghosts were knocking on the table. With today's technology, who knows what you could pull off?
RICHEY:
I assure you, there is nothing inauthentic about my abilities.
BOBBY:
Why don't you show her the other thing?
RICHEY:
I'm afraid that can't be done entirely of our own volition.
LAURA:
You're not interested in reality. But with my help, you'll get there. I have to do research.
RICHEY:
(Aside to Laura)
Valiant effort, my dear.
(To Bobby)
It's best that she leaves anyway.
BOBBY:
It doesn't bother you that she talks about you like that?
RICHEY:
Not at all. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs. Now let us concentrate.
(Richey and Bobby join hands. They close their eyes and breathe together. The wind picks up. Soon it is blowing rather strongly.)
They're here. Can you feel them?
BOBBY:
Yes. I can!
(Bobby and Richey freeze)
BOBBY:
Nancy please... Just give me a break.
(Richey enters)
BOBBY:
Just in time. Richey, please. Please connect me to Shane, if you can. Right now.
RICHEY:
Okay.
BOBBY:
I need it.
RICHEY:
Okay.
BOBBY:
Please.
RICHEY:
Just calm down, just breathe. Relax. RELAX. Sit on the blanket and just concentrate. And breathe. It's okay. The spirits tell us that we need not worry. Everything has its place. So just relax. And breathe. (To NANCY) I think you've done enough for now.
NANCY:
Hey Laura!
(The ghost children gather. Lights and sound become spooky again. Bobby begins to levitate, still focusing on his breathing. Then...)
BOBBY:
SHANE! WOW!
(Bobby laughs)
(The moment ends and they exit)
THE HOST:
We're getting close to it. Remember when I told you that the story about the train hitting the school bus never happened? Well, now that Nancy and Laura have teamed up, Laura has realized that the answer isn't in physics. It's in history. They are about to confront Bobby with the reality that his fantasy is nothing more than a delusion. And maybe it'll help me figure out something about my own life lies.
(Lights up on Bobby, Nancy, Richey, and Laura at the tracks. The Ghost Children watch while eating popcorn)
LAURA:
You've been lying about this place and we can prove it.
RICHEY:
I have no lied about anything.
LAURA:
This is why Richey isn't doing his psychic thing with us here. He did his research too, like any good con man.
RICHEY:
I'm no con man.
LAURA:
You can drop it already. There's no point dragging out this ghost children thing.
RICHEY:
Just because that story is fake doesn't mean there aren't any spirits. Spirits can live anywhere people live and die. And people have been living and dying around here for a long time. The children that inhabit these tracks are just children who lived and died here. Just like Shane. They don't need a dramatic train accident to exist.
LAURA:
And it's obvious why he didn't tell you, isn't it? He wants your money, Bobby.
RICHEY:
And I'm sure you do your little videos for free.
LAURA:
I'm not exploiting grieving, vulnerable people.
RICHEY:
Neither am I, I have a skill. I deserve to get paid for that skill. My prices and fee schedules are on my website. I'm an honest professional and I only hope that my product can help people find peace.
NANCY:
Bobby wait.
(She follows him)
RICHEY:
Ah, Laura. I suppose this is some kind of payback?
LAURA:
Do you remember me now?
RICHEY:
Yes. Your mother's name was Margaret. I helped her at the end of her life.
LAURA:
Did you read my mind for that one?
RICHEY:
Not exactly. After you told me your name a few days ago, I googled you and then compared the results to my diaries. No psychic powers needed.
LAURA:
Wow... I gotta say this is a little bit underwhelming.
RICHEY:
Sorry to disappoint.
LAURA:
I always imagined that when I finally caught up to you, I'd have a Princess Bride, "you killed my mother; prepare to die," kind of moment.
RICHEY:
I take it that you're not satisfied with the service I provided for you then...
LAURA:
Service? You convinced my mother to stop fighting and then you cleaned out as much of her savings as you could.
RICHEY:
That is a slanderous misrepresentation of the work I did for her.
LAURA:
It's the truth.
RICHEY:
I helped her pass on peacefully and gracefully.
LAURA:
You may not have killed her, but you didn't get in the way.
RICHEY:
She made her own decision. It's a decision that a lot of people make, unfortunately.
LAURA:
Forget the money. You took my mother from me.
RICHEY:
I didn't take anything from you.
LAURA:
I'm gonna make sure you don't take any more money from Bobby. I'm gonna expose you. The whole world is gonna know the truth about this f-ing scam.
RICHEY:
In all the years I've been doing this, do you really think I've never been wrong? "Exposed?" Humiliated? I've been wrong more times than you have tried at anything. Yet here I am. Still working.
LAURA:
Not for long.
RICHEY:
And you've said a great deal in recent days about objectivity, and science, and truth. Why don't you turn those fine ideals on yourself? Because you rage that I "took away your mother." It is so much easier for you to blame me for your mother's death than it is to face the truth. It pains me to say this, but your mother was living on borrowed time. Whether she had fought or not, she almost certainly would have passed away in the five or so years since her death.
LAURA:
You're a doctor now?
RICHEY:
THAT is the truth. Instead of delaying to the detriment of everyone around her, she met it head on. And only asked that I use my gifts to settle unfinished business and most importantly, help her find peace with her mortality. I have never seen anyone so brave, so dignified in death.
LAURA:
You didn't even remember her at first.
RICHEY:
She came back to me. I treasure the time I spent with her... So think about this... Let's say this is all "bullshit," as you say. Even if it is, the peace that your mother felt as she passed from this world to the next was REAL.
LAURA:
Nothing built on a lie can be real.
RICHEY:
It was real because she BELIEVED it was real. And when it comes to the FINAL truth, the space between one's ears is a unique and distinct reality separate from any other. She was happy. And you can't accept it because you're trying to impose your own reality, your own rigid "objectivity" on her. But if you could have just observed her with your own two eyes you would have seen it.
(Laura is silent)
And if you want some peace of your own... I can try to connect you to her some time.
LAURA:
For a fee?
RICHEY:
Always.
(They exit)
BOBBY:
Are you really just... are you really just gone...?
(Light change)
(A few minutes later. Lights up on Richey at the tracks, collecting his belongings. The ghost children help. When he is all packed up and ready to go, he realizes he is still alone. He looks around, checks his watch)
LAURA:
Where's Bobby?
RICHEY:
Back already?
LAURA:
Have you seen Bobby?
RICHEY:
I haven't seen him since your little tantrum.
BOBBY:
I can handle it.
RICHEY:
Bobby, you don't have to listen to this negativity.
LAURA:
I bet you're scared now.
RICHEY:
You are not entitled to use that material. Your network agreed to seal and remove it as part of an agreement with my attorneys.
LAURA:
Oh I'm not supposed to have access to it. But I do.
RICHEY:
Think carefully about what you're doing with this. You could be making a career ending mistake.
LAURA:
Do you see how nervous he is all of a sudden? Uh oh.
RICHEY:
It's already illegal that you have that footage, but I'll give you a pass if you just delete it from your computer.
LAURA:
Why don't you ask one of your ghosts to stop me?
(Laura presses play. Light change. The Host reappears and Richey joins him as they act out Laura's video)
THE HOST:
We invited him here to this now defunct candy factor. But first we created a website chronicling the fascinating history of this factory and its founder, Walter Gregers.
RICHEY:
There's someone here. He's telling me his name is Walter. Hello Walter.
THE HOST:
The only problem? We made it all up; Walter Gregers never existed.
RICHEY:
Wow. This place. This place is full of spirits of all different sorts. This place must have been the site incredible stories.
THE HOST:
Mr. Otis proceeded to relate to us the long chronicle of Walter Gregers for over an hour. This technique is called "hot reading." It simply involves self-professed psychics researching their targets beforehand. Simple as it is, it has proven highly effective. (To Richey) Mr. Otis. I have a confession to make. And so do you. You found all of the information you just relayed to me on the internet.
RICHEY:
Oh no. Absolutely not.
THE HOST:
With respect sir, yes you did. Would you like to know how I determined that?
RICHEY:
This is outrageous. I will not be insulted like this.
THE HOST:
Sir. Every detail on the website you found was fabricated by our writing team. Walter Gregers never existed.
(An uncomfortably long pause. The ghost children giggle)
RICHEY:
Well it makes perfect sense if you and your staff wrote it.
THE HOST:
I don't follow.
RICHEY:
That information doesn't just stay with you. It wanders out into the open and mixes with the spirits in here. But in this case I now realized that I got the story from your psychokinetic energy and just assumed it was the spirits that inhabit this place telling me your Gregers story.
THE HOST:
You're saying that you recited the information from our website almost verbatim because you read my mind?
RICHEY:
Yes.
THE HOST:
That is a fascinating excuse.
RICHEY:
I do apologize for that intrusion into your mind. I assumed it was the spirits telling me your Gregers story. Ha! What a little mixup that was!
THE HOST:
If you would just stay for a moment --
RICHEY:
Well goodbye. Thank you!
THE HOST:
Please sir, we have some questions. He's gone.
(Light change as Laura presses a button; the video scene goes away. Richey is back in the present)
RICHEY:
You'll be hearing from my lawyer and from my friends at your network.
LAURA:
Yeah, good luck with that. Turns out the network axed this episode because they were renewing their Real Psychics of the Upper Valley show and making spinoffs in other cities - not because they were scared of your little lawsuit.
RICHEY:
Bobby, I'm a victim of biased editing. They were just trying to embarrass me.
LAURA:
Well consider yourself embarrassed.
RICHEY:
This changes nothing Bobby. You have made so much progress and we can continue connecting to Shane for as long as doing so makes you feel good.
NANCY:
Yeah, don't pull a muscle patting yourself on the back, kid.
RICHEY:
We've seen things together. I've told you things that no one else could have known. Please, Bobby. Give me a chance to remind you that I am legitimate.
(Richey concentrates. The lights start to change. The wind picks up. The ghost children watch)
BOBBY:
Can we ask Shane if he has seen his Grandpa Mark in the afterlife?
RICHEY:
Yes of course.
(The lights and sound become very spooky. Richey levitates)
Yes of course. They're having such a marvelous time together.
BOBBY:
Okay, you can stop right there.
(Very suddenly, the lights go back to normal and Richey returns to the ground)
RICHEY:
I don't understand.
NANCY:
Shane's grandparents are all alive.
(An awkward pause)
RICHEY:
Right. I never said that Grandpa Mark was dead. I merely said that he and Shane were enjoying each other's company, which is true. It seems your father is paranormal-sensitive as well.
BOBBY:
This is for you.
RICHEY:
What is it?
BOBBY:
The rest of your payment.
RICHEY:
I don't understand.
BOBBY:
It's what we agreed on. And you have helped me. A lot. Probably more than either of us realize right now. I still believe in your gifts Richey. You're right. We've seen things. But it's time for me to see some things on my own.
RICHEY:
And thank you for honoring our agreement.
NANCY:
Of course.
(They exit)
RICHEY:
Do you feel good now? You got what you wanted.
LAURA:
I feel fantastic.
RICHEY:
Do you really think you helped anything? Do you really think that man can be happier now that you have destroyed the one the thing that made him happy? HIS BELIEF.
LAURA:
Happiness built on a lie is not true happiness. EVER.
RICHEY:
And you are a marvelous arbiter of truth aren't you?
LAURA:
No. Science is. And science says ghosts aren't real.
RICHEY:
There are all sorts of lies that we tell ourselves to make this life easier to endure. When those lies fail us, life becomes a burden. You're lucky that you'll be gone back to your little video series before you can see the effect this will have on our dear Bobby.
LAURA:
Bobby's gonna go through a rough patch. But it'll only make him stronger. With the right PROFESSIONAL HELP he'll come out of it better than before.
RICHEY:
Ha! It's more likely that he'll throw himself in front of a train at this very spot.
LAURA:
Looks like the lie you tell yourself is that people need you and would die without you.
RICHEY:
And your lie is that you are about helping people. So here we are. Two liars.
