Biology - Enzymes
Terms in this set (18)
Term used for all Chemical Reactions that happen in the body
What are the two types of reactions in a Metabolism?
The breaking down of things and the type that builds things up
The substances that are used up in a chemical reaction
The end result in a chemical reaction
The speed at which a Chemical Reaction occurs
How do you calculate the Reaction Rate?
Amount of Product / time = rate
Speed up chemical reactions
Why are reaction rates so important?
Chemical Reactions must occur quickly in order for things to survive and grow
Substance that speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction
In a cell
Catalyze = enzyme
In a lab
Catalyze = iron
The smallest amount of energy needed to start a chemical reaction
Enzyme vs. Activation energy
Enzymes reduce the amount of activation energy
What are enzymes and what are they made up of?
Enzymes are made up of Amino Acids and they are proteins
What makes enzymes different?
Enzymes have a different sequence of amino acids which causes them all to have a different structure
Where the reactions are changed into products
The reactants that bind to the enzyme
How are enzymes delicate?
A slight change in temperature or pH can change the shape of the enzyme, causing the substrate to not fit on the enzyme, restricting the reaction to occur.
